June 13 2026 Race Results

Good evening everyone,

The morning began with differing opinions on where to race. Willingdon to the mill and back was favoured by the more conservative folks but deemed far to boring for the younger crowd as there was no wind available. After considerable haggling the young ones got their way and we elected to motor over to Cyril rock where there was hope in the form of some dark blue water. The plan was to race from Cyril Rock, around Rebecca Rock clockwise and finish back where we started. It turned out to be an excellent plan. We had enough wind to average 3 - 5 knots of boat speed. The upwind leg was a good challenge and the downwind leg back home gave us a beautiful spinnaker run. After race comments were enthusiastically favourable. All the elements for a good race were found including lots of wind, sunshine and stunning views not to mention the excellent competitive sailing. Una had a good start shadowed by Bring Ice and followed closely by Kukuna, Revelar and Navis. Seance chose the opposite tack but joined in with the rest of the fleet at Rebecca Rock. Una maintained her lead throughout and increased it on the spinnaker run to capture line honours as well as the win in corrected time.

Good evening everyone,

Sailing conditions don’t get much better than todays. Five of us started and raced from Willingdon upwind to the mill, on a close reach to virtual point “G”, downwind to Grief Point with a final upwind leg to the South Harbour mark. Unfortunately Una obstructed Bring Ice at the start and failed to complete the full penalty circles and so was disqualified. In our innocence however we had a wonderful and exciting race. It just didn’t count. The winds were shifting, the sails were always drawing and the trimmers were constantly trimming. In the end Seance crossed first followed by Bring Ice, Kukuna, and Navis. Congratulations to Kukuna for the win in corrected time.

Race results May 30, 2026

Good evening sailors,

A fairly steady 5 15 knot north wester gave us great sailing conditions. We raced from Willingdon upwind to the mill mark, on a close reach for 1 nautical mile out to a virtual mark, then downwind to Grief point before another close reach to Willingdon for the finish. Most of us covered the nine nautical miles in well under 2 hours.

Strong winds with a healthy chop greeted us for the start but with only 5 boats there were no complaints. Seance led the pack with Una, Kukuna, Revelar, and Navis following. The main contest was between Una and Kukuna as Kukuna remained very close which with a larger handicap meant she was leading. The reach out to the virtual mark saw Seance arrive well ahead followed by Revelar, Kukuna, Una and Navis in that order. The downwind run with spinnakers gave Una the advantage as she reached Grief Point second behind Seance. On the final leg Una actually caught Seance as the wind dropped and almost stole the show but for a last second puff which took Seance across the finish 7 seconds ahead of Una. Revelar really showed her abilities on the last leg as she caught Kukuna and finished 3rd across the line.

Congratulations to Seance for first to cross and to Una for the very close win in corrected time.

ALGERINE 2026

Dear sailing community,

The Algerine was first raced on the Victoria day weekend in 1970. Sunday, May 17th. marked the 50th race to be completed.

Thirteen boats took part in the race with 11 managing to complete. The winds gave us a smorgasbord of challenges. The start found us in a 12 – 15 knot north-west breeze with a healthy chop. With plenty of wind the race belonged to the larger boats. The start was the line between P52 and the bell buoy (P54). P54 was the favoured end by several hundred meters and so everyone was aiming for it to start. No boats got chopped in half but it was close . Being late as usual we watched from behind as Unfinished Business came powering in on starboard at twice the speed of most others. Coming within inches of the bell buoy she turned abruptly onto a port tack to dramatically lead the way into clean air somehow avoiding several others.

Our course took us from the bell buoy to the north end of Vivian Island, through the channel between Vivian and Ahgykson (formerly Harwood) Island and then across Malaspina Straight to finish just south of our south boat harbour.

The wind held for two hours until it slowly died a couple of miles from Vivian. Our windex was spinning 360’s in the slop as was our boat with no steerage. Fortunately another wave of wind built from northwest and veered around to the west and finally to southwest to take us well into Malaspina straight before it too collapsed leaving boats floundering hither and yon, one down by Willingdon and others up by the Texada shore and still others somewhere between. Finally a south-east breeze appeared to take us to the finish and the 50th successful Algerine race was completed.

Congratulations to Unfinished Business from Pender Harbour for line honours and respectable win in corrected time.

April 25th, 2026 race results

Hi everyone,

Expectations were for a morning of drifting about as the sea showed barely a ripple and the Predict Wind forecast was for “light and variable”. At the skippers meeting a slight breeze was apparent coming from the west and so starting north or south would be a reach. The decision (wrong) was to start going south. We would begin at the South Harbour and attempt to reach the Grief Point mark before returning to the south harbour mark for the finish. As we positioned for the start it became evident there was a trickster at work. The wind had swung to come from the northwest and so we would be having a downwind start. This is generally avoided as it can result in steerage issues and possibly even a giant CLUSTERCHUCK which it did. photo below. Thanks Chris.

Una was first to raise her spinnaker and break away from the crowd, As the rest sorted themselves out the breeze increased and the fleet moved along smartly with Kukuna, Balderdash, Seance, Bring Ice, Footloose, Solitude and Navis in pursuit. Turning the Grief Point mark and making a good 4 knots the course was changed and lengthened to take us upwind to the mill mark while the finish would be at Willingdon beach. It was another almost perfect day for sailing about in the Salish Sea with arguably a bit too much sunshine. The breeze carried us along on our zig zag to the mill mark at over 5 knots until it didn’t on the final run to Willingdon. Una cruised through the finish just as the breeze dropped leaving others struggling to keep steerage. Bring Ice slipped through to finish second ahead of Seance and Balderdash. Congrats to Una for line honours and the
