Day 11 of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

Recognize triggers. If you, your friends, or family are in a time of crisis, seek support and learn which local, regional, and national services for those affected by gender-based violence are available to help. Times of crises, like financial pressures from a job loss or a global pandemic, can increase the risk of GBV.

Day 4 of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

Be alert to non-physical violence. Not all gender-based violence is physical. Name-calling, stalking, harassment, control (including financial), cyber attacks, and manipulation are all forms of GBV.

Day 3 of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

Stop victim shaming/blaming. Generally, victims won’t report gender-based violence cases to the police because they feel they will be shamed by their families, friends, or the offender.

Day 2 of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

Know the risks. The odds of experiencing violence are not the same for everyone. Young women and girls, Black and racialized women and girls, Indigenous women and girls, 2SLGBTQI+ and gender non-binary individuals, women in Northern, rural, and remote communities, and people with disabilities are at much greater risk of experiencing GBV.

qathet Safe is coordinating the annual 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence in Powell River from November 25, the International Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women, until December 10, Human Rights Day.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign to bring awareness and strategies for individuals and organizations to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.

qathet Safe’s community awareness campaign will include a Tree of Purple Lights campaigning the 16 Days of Activism and the Shoe Memorial display at the Powell River Public Library, and a social media campaign to bring awareness to gender-based violence and highlight the support services in the community for families who find themselves in crisis.

The Shoe Memorial exhibit will be on displayed on Dec 6, to commemorate the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Dec 6 is the anniversary of the 14 women killed in a gender-based act of violence at the École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1989. At the memorial, hundreds of shoes will be displayed and include a short biography of a woman or child who died due to violence or is missing under suspicious circumstances.
