We are hearing language in our community that dehumanizes people who are experiencing homelessness, substance use, mental health challenges, and the lasting impacts of trauma. As people of faith, we are called to see beyond labels and stereotypes. Every person is a beloved child of God, deserving of dignity, compassion, and respect.

Many who struggle with homelessness or substance use have endured profound losses, violence, discrimination, and trauma. Their stories are often marked not by personal failure, but by circumstances that would challenge any of us. Responding with blame, exclusion, or hatred does not heal our community—it deepens wounds and creates further division.

The PR United Church’s call is not to turn away from those who are suffering, but to walk alongside them.

We can hold concerns about community safety while also holding compassion for those who are struggling. These are not opposing values. Lasting safety and wellbeing are built when we care for one another, especially those facing the greatest challenges.

May we choose understanding over judgment, hope over fear, and love over hate.

Big giant thank you to Terracentric Coastal Adventures for training Miklat staff and volunteers today on canoe safety, in anticipation of our new canoe program at Miklat. There's something very therapeutic about getting out on the water, listening to the birds chirp and the wind blowing, enjoying the beauty of nature in all its wonder. We are extremely grateful for this gift of canoes, from Vancouver Coastal Health, to teach our clients how to live life to the fullest and enjoy the great outdoors, gratefully living and playing on traditional Tla’amin lands. Here are some photos from today's training.

Congratulations to Andrew B.! ❤️

Andrew is a friendly, youthful, and compassionate man who made a positive impression on everyone during his stay. He was kind, respectful, and always willing to go out of his way to help others. Andrew stayed on the path the entire time and was well liked by everyone around him.

It was wonderful to have his family attend, along with his beautiful fiancée. Since Andrew is local, we hope he continues to visit us, stay connected, and remain part of the Miklat community. We are so proud of you, Andrew, and we look forward to seeing the wedding photos!

🎓 Congratulations to Russ and Mikey on their graduation! 🎓

It has been an absolute privilege to walk alongside both of these men during their time with us.

Russ was truly an amazing client to have in the program. He brought leadership, humour, wisdom, and heart into the house every day. He became a father figure to many, and it was easy to see why everyone loved and respected him so much. Russ is funny, smart, kind, and steady, and we were especially grateful to have his family there to celebrate with him, including his two sons.

Mikey may be a quieter guy, but he has a strong presence in his own way. He is intelligent, friendly, thoughtful, and a wonderful person to be around. We really enjoyed having him as part of the program and seeing him reach this milestone.

Russ has moved on to second-stage housing following treatment, and Mikey has headed up north to work. We will miss them both very much, but we are proud of the steps they are taking and excited for what lies ahead.

Congratulations, Russ and Mikey. We wish you both continued strength, success, and happiness on the road ahead. You will always be part of the Miklat family. 💙
