AREA Fund - 2013 Walk for Truth: Asbestos Kills

AREA Fund - 2013 Walk for Truth: Asbestos Kills On June 22, 2013 the second annual Walk for Truth: Asbestos Kills event will be held in Powell River, BC at the Recreation Complex.

The Walk for Truth: Asbestos Kills event will be held in Powell River, BC on June 22, 2013 to raise awareness of the hazards of asbestos and to honour all asbestos victims. We are still working out the details, but it will be an expanded event from last year. In addition to the speeches, the flower drop, and the 3.5 km walk, we will have a hotdog barbeque, followed by a book reading/signing. The b

ook is the award winning novel Rock Reject by author Jim Williams who has generously agreed to fly from his home in Halifax, NS to join us for the day. Rock Reject won the 2011 Beacon Award for Social Justice Literature. Set in the 1970s — at a time when the dangers of asbestos first began to surface — Rock Reject is a story about accepting responsibility for one’s actions, corporate irresponsibility and the blind pursuit of profit at the expense of physical and environmental health. As there are no known cures for the diseases that asbestos creates and asbestos is still all around us in many of the buildings we use (including our homes), we are hoping that the book reading/signing will help us reach a wider audience regarding the hazards of asbestos.
