Our goal is to foster a healthy business community in Portugal Cove - St. Philips to encourage synergies amongst our members, develop opportunities for future development and address current obstacles affecting our business community. Our chamber will aim to be a unified voice for our members to improve upon the current economic and political conditions faced today. Small Business Week: MHAs Fred Hutton & Joedy Wall

We're thrilled to confirm that our newly elected MHAs — Fred Hutton (District of Conception Bay East–Bell Island) and Joedy Wall(District of Cape St. Francis) — will be attending our annual Small Business Week event on Wednesday, October 22!

The Town of Torbay will be holding a Lunch and learn session on Friday, October 24, 2025 from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Torbay Common. This event will include a light lunch and an overview of the programs and services available to small / medium business on hiring and retaining newcomers as employees. This session will feature two brief presentations followed by a Q and A session.

Brief presentations will be delivered by the following local organizations, both who have significant knowledge and experience in supporting newcomers and working with employers who are trying to fill vacancies in their business!

Association for New Canadians

The Association for New Canadians (ANC) is a non-profit, community-based organization delivering settlement and integration services to immigrants and refugees in Newfoundland and Labrador. For more than 40 years, the Association has delivered programs and services that support all aspects of immigrant integration, ranging from settlement information and orientation to language learning, skills development and employment.

Ukrainian National Federation – Avalon Branch (UNF Avalon)

UNF Avalon, a branch of the Ukrainian National Federation of Canada, is committed to preserving, producing and promoting a vibrant Ukrainian community and culture in Newfoundland and Labrador. The UNF of Canada and its Affiliates offer a source of support, coordination and information for the local Ukrainian Canadian Community.

The Canadian Mental Health Association - Newfoundland and Labrador (CMHA-NL)

The Canadian Mental Health Association-Newfoundland and Labrador (CMHA-NL), is a provincial division of CMHA. The nationwide leader and champion for mental health. The Steering Success program is focused on supporting and providing mental health education for newcomers & employers.

NEXT WEEK is our Small Business Week event and we're thrilled to have Aaron Rodgers, the Manager of the O'Brien Farm joining us as a guest speaker!

He will be joining us with his presentation: ‘Small-Scale, Big Lessons: What Local Farms Teach Us About Modern Business’, which we’re thrilled about given the Killick Coast Agriculture Strategic Plan that the Chamber developed alongside industry experts to explore ways to help our region and its people.

ABOUT AARON

AARON RODGERS is a native of California wine country. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental
Studies and Global Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Master of Science in
Agricultural Economics from Mississippi State University. His published work is concerns machine
adoption theory and labor economics in the American blueberry industry. He spent two years as an
Agriculture Extension Agent in the Futa region of Senegal with the U.S. Peace Corps. After his studies he
managed the Farm to School Program for the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce. He
most recently was the Executive Director of the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum in Jackson,
Mississippi where he managed a 40-acre working farm, heritage town, and museum complex. He
currently is the Manager of O’Brien Farm in St. John’s, Newfoundland where he is developing an
incubator farm program and cultural heritage learning center.
