COMMUNITY PRIDE AT THE ROTARY DUCK POND!

Our club takes immense pride in keeping the Rotary Duck Pond a beautiful, welcoming space for everyone in Portage la Prairie—but we certainly don’t do it alone!

We want to extend a massive, heartfelt THANK YOU to the incredible volunteers from the Association of Filipinos in Portage la Prairie and every single community member who came out to lend a helping hand. Because of your hard work, dedication, and community spirit, our beloved pond is shining bright.

We’re back!!
After taking some time off over the summer, our club met last night at the Duck Pond to hear from students that went to RYLA camp earlier this year. RYLA stands for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. It is a one week camp at Clear Lake focusing on teaching students leadership techniques and problem solving skills both as an individual and in a team.

Emma Clayburn, Lucy Irwin, Henry Peto and Victor Ogbonna all said a few words about their time at RYLA and how much each of them enjoyed the experience.

Thanks to everyone for coming out last night and telling us about your exciting adventure! The Amazing Race and late night games were talked about as favourite experiences and portaging with a canoe being mentioned as not as much fun!

You may have noticed a layer “green scum” on the Duck Pond.

That is Duckweed.

The Portage Rotary Club has been working with the City of Portage la Prairie’s Operations Department to find a long term solution to the growth of duckweed on the pond. So far, no long term solution has been found although we are continuing to look into this. Our apologies for the look of the pond water this year. It is unfortunately beyond our control.

Teamwork makes the dream work!

Huge shoutout to six amazing staff members from the United Way Brandon office and our two hardworking Green Team students! They spent Wednesday morning (July 23) giving back to our community in Portage la Prairie with some hands-on cleanup and maintenance at the beautiful Rotary Duck Pond.

Supporting community spaces across our region and keeping them beautiful is a true team effort. Thank you to everyone who rolled up their sleeves to make a difference!

✨ The Rotary Duck Pond is looking absolutely magical this morning! ✨

If you notice a green covering on the water, don’t worry—it’s not algae! It is Duck W**d, an essential and healthy part of most pond ecosystems. 🌱

This beautiful space is truly a community effort. A massive thank you to all of our incredible volunteers, including the PCRC summer students who worked hard yesterday, and the Money Mart volunteers heading down tomorrow to help out! 🙌

We started bright and early with our annual pancake breakfast! It was a super busy morning, we served roughly 320 breakfasts this morning to start the days festivities!!

Presenting Tosha Hotel, the Portage Rotary Club, Rotarian of the Year, as voted on by her fellow club members. Tosha gives so much to our club and has ever since she joined the club, but this year she has stepped up in a major way taking on a key leadership role with our forthcoming Rotary Playspace Legacy Project. Our Annual Pancake Breakfast is coming up on Canada Day!

Come on down to Stride Place Wednesday, July 1st for a full day of activities capped off with fireworks over Crescent Lake!

We’ll be there bright and early serving pancakes from 9am-11am. $5 per plate.

Great evening golfing for the “Rotary Cup”!
With team Fedak/Theoret taking home the trophy, the rest of us will try again next year.
