This evening, October 4, 2026, City Hall and the Island Park Causeway will shine in red in support of the Sisters in Spirit awareness initiative. We recognize Sisters in Spirit Day and stand in solidarity with Indigenous families, survivors, and communities. We remember those who are missing, support their families and communities, and stand together in raising awareness and advocating for justice and healing.

In support of this initiative, the Sexually Exploited Youth (SEY Committee) is hosting a Grandmothers Walk & Sisters in Spirit Vigil on Friday, October 9th at Prairie Fusion. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Condoms are highly effective at preventing HIV transmission and many other s*xually transmitted infections.

During s*x HIV transmission occurs when the virus in semen, re**al fluid, vaginal fluid, or blood gets into the body of another person. Condoms are great at preventing this.

What an incredible three days ❤️

From September 15-17, our community came together in Winnipeg for the 2026 Manitoba Harm Reduction Conference: Harm Reduction Saves Lives.

Over three days, we learned from one another, shared experiences and knowledge, made new connections, honoured community and culture, and continued important conversations about harm reduction across Manitoba and beyond.

To our speakers, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, ceremony practitioners, attendees, peers, staff, exhibitors, sponsors, partners and everyone who helped make this gathering possible — thank you.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who showed up, shared space with us and helped create the community we experienced throughout these three days.

Provincial guidelines recommend that everyone should be tested at least once in their life, and routine testing is recommended every five years for everyone between the ages of 12 and 70.

For certain groups of people, or for individuals who are more likely to be exposed to HIV, more frequent testing is recommended.

With treatment, HIV is a manageable chronic condition. HIV+ people on treatment can live long, healthy lives and treatment can make you unable to s*xually transmit HIV.

Get tested, know your status. Routine testing every five years is recommended for everyone, age 12-70, and more often for certain groups. Talk to your doctor if you haven’t been tested in a while.

Drug Alert: Winnipeg - Tue. September 1, 2026

A yellow powder believed to be DOWN and associated with a fatal overdose contained fentanyl and medetomidine.

Medetomidine is a sedative/tranquilizer only approved for use in animals.

Combining high-potency opioids like fentanyl with tranquilizers increases the risk of a complex overdose with suppression of breathing, blood pressure and heart rate.

Naloxone will not reverse the medetomidine, but should still be given to reverse the opioid component.

The sample was brought to Street Connections on August 21, where it tested positive on strips for fentanyl and mede. Health Canada Drug Analysis Service (DAS) confirmed that it contained fentanyl, medetomidine and para-fluorofentanyl.

Yesterday was International Overdose Awareness Day.
The community came together, remembered our loved ones.
Thank you to all who supported and attended our event.

🔥 A big shoutout to Homestead Co-op for supporting our BBQ fundraiser, Overdose Awareness Day: Honoring Lives and Celebrating Life in Portage la Prairie!

Their continued support for programs like this where we assist and support our community members contributes to the health and safety of vulnerable individuals in rural communities like Portage. This event provides us the opportunity to connect with our community. We’re lucky to have strong community partners who give back.

🧡 National Indigenous Peoples Day may have been yesterday, but recognition doesn't end on June 21.

Today, and every day, we honour the histories, cultures, languages, and enduring contributions of Indigenous people.

At MHRN, we recognize that harm reduction, health equity, and community wellness are deeply connected to truth, reconciliation, and Indigenous self-determination.

We remain committed to listening, learning, and supporting Indigenous-led approaches that strengthen communities and uphold dignity, respect, and belonging.

Recognition is not a single day.
It is an ongoing responsibility.
