Port Stanley’s Kettle Creek Swans recently hosted a Walk for Dog Guides at the Port Legion. The ‘walk’ has been an annual event in the village for almost forty years, raising many thousands of dollars during that time. The funds raised financially supports the training of dogs for one of seven programs at the Lions Foundation of Canada’s headquarters in Oakville. The programmes are Diabetes Alert, Canine Vision, Hearing, Facility Support, Service, Seizure Response and Autism Assistance. The training can take up to a year for a dog to be ready for partnership with a Canadian who requires the need of a service dog. At this time the person arrives at Oakville for the partnership training to take place until this new is ready to leave. These service dogs made available to any Canadian no matter where they at no charge. It can cost up to 35,000 for the training of a dog. The Lions facility in Oakville doesn’t receive any Government support relying strictly on donations with Pet Value being a major sponsor. The dog walk itself is an integral part of fund’s raised off which remains in Canada. The Port Stanley walk was one of over two hundred held across Canada on May 31st. A number of Distinguished guests were in attendance including MP Andrew Lawton, Central Elgin Mayor Andrew Sloan, Ward One and Two Councillors Michelle Graham and Morgaine Griffin. MPP Rob Flack sent best wishes but couldn’t attend because of a prior commitment. Opening remarks were made by District Vice President Swan Susan Munro. Andrew Lawton offered congratulations for all the years hosting this event of which was echoed by Andrew Sloan stating the importance of service groups in the communities and how much they enhance the quality of life for all. Michelle Graham praised all the work the Swans have done and how much they mean to the community. The highlight of the event was the attendance of Natalie Barrett and her Diabetes Alert Dog Guide, Phoebe. The ‘walk’ Chairperson Bev Filewood stated she was so pleased with the hard work committee and the rest of her club had made to help raise over $13,000 for the event. The Swans are extremely grateful to all the sponsors and those who donated money towards this worthy cause also thanking Branch 410 Port Stanley Legion for the use of their facility to host the event. District 1 President Amanda Brand came to our April General meeting. She told us about Pathways Health Centre for Children. Here is our donation of $500 from funds raised through Jackpot Time St. Thomas.

Tony Varghese from St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation was at our meeting to accept the second installment for a fetal monitor purchased for the Women and Children Department. Our group is very thankful for the funds obtained from Jackpot Time St. Thomas.

Kettle Creek Swan Bev Filewood accepts a donation cheque from Port Stanley Optimist member Joyce Cuttell towards the Swans annual Walk for Dog Guides to be held on May 30th at the Port Stanley Legion at 1.30pm. All donations go to the Lions Foundation of Canada for the training of dog guides for Canadians
