A major theme of this spring has been southern overshoots! Today the Tip team caught this aptly named Yellow-throated Warbler. Like the Worm-eating Warbler and Summer Tanager, this species isn’t too far off course, normally breeding across the southeastern United States.

Late May and early June can still be an exciting time for migration — especially for finding rare southern visitors and other vagrants. With such a delayed spring, we’re still catching a great mix of warblers, vireos, and flycatchers.

If you’d like to experience the banding lab for yourself, Old Cut is open for just over one more week!

Birders can get impatient for migration and go hard in the first two weeks of May, but late May can still be incredibly productive — especially in a delayed season like this one! Overnight conditions were perfect, with warm south winds and morning drizzle bringing in fresh migrants.

Breakwater was treated to this female Painted Bunting today. While lacking the dazzling colours of the males, the females have a subtle beauty of their own with their soft green plumage. This species is typically found in the southern United States, making this bird a classic spring overshoot.

Interestingly, of the 8 Painted Buntings recorded in the Long Point area, 6 have been found at Breakwater! You never know what might turn up during migration.

Well the weathers pretty wet and soggy today but we’ve had some great birds in the past ten days! More Summer Tanagers, Henslow’s Sparrow, Piping Plovers and an adult Little Blue Heron.

We struck gold for Birdathon’s 50th anniversary! ✨ This stunning Golden-winged Warbler is a Species at Risk, with populations declining by more than 50% over the last 50 years.

Please consider donating $50 to Canada’s largest fundraiser for bird conservation to help protect Golden-winged Warblers and so many other incredible birds for generations to come. 🐦💛

It’s the last week to join a guided bird tour with our Bird in Residence, — make sure to book your spot, link in bio!

This is a fantastic week to visit as migration has been heavily delayed by the weather, meaning we’re now getting an incredible mix of warblers and other migrants all at once. Every walk has been full of surprises! Don’t miss out before they are gone!

These two warblers may look and sound very different, but genetically they are almost the same species — around 99.9% identical! Because of this, they can easily hybridize, which is one of the major conservation challenges facing Golden-winged Warblers, as Blue-winged genetics often become dominant over time.
Their mixing also produces some fascinating hybrids known as Brewster’s and Lawrence’s Warblers. That’s why it’s always such a treat to catch a beautifully “pure” looking Golden-winged Warbler like this one from Breakwater today!
