Restoring habitat to help bring rare butterflies back to Norfolk County.

Long Point Basin Land Trust's newest nature reserve has the potential to become an important reintroduction site for butterfly recovery in Southwestern Ontario.

Through ecological restoration, former agricultural fields will be transformed into native oak savanna habitat—the rare ecosystem needed to support species like the Mottled Duskywing and Frosted Elfin.

Once suitable habitat is restored, the Ontario Butterfly Species at Risk Recovery Team will lead future reintroduction efforts, helping these remarkable butterflies return to places where they were once found ( https://www.facebook.com/people/Ontario-Butterfly-Species-at-Risk-Recovery-Team/61591690742488/ )

While butterflies are the inspiration for this project, restoring oak savanna habitat will also benefit countless native plants, pollinators, birds, reptiles, and other wildlife that depend on this unique ecosystem.

We're so close to making this vision a reality! Only 5% of the funds needed remain to complete the Stewardship Endowment Fund contribution, ensuring this future nature reserve will not only be protected, but also cared for forever.

🌿 Conservation isn't just about protecting nature — it's about restoring it too.

This , we're celebrating the transformation taking place at Alton Family Nature Reserve.

What were once three former agricultural fields are now being restored with native wildflowers, grasses, shrubs, and trees. Over time, these restored fields will become thriving habitat for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife, while helping to strengthen the Clear Creek corridor and connect protected natural areas across the landscape.

Join Karma Yoga at Birds Canada HQ in Port Rowan every Saturday at 9:30 a.m. this summer (July, August, and Labour Day weekend). These gentle, all-levels classes are led by local volunteer instructors, and every pay-what-you-can donation supports local charities.

We're especially grateful that donations from the August 1 and September 5 sessions will support the Long Point Basin Land Trust and our work to protect and restore nature in the Long Point Basin.

This National Pollinator Week (June 22–28), we're celebrating the bees, butterflies, moths, and other pollinators that help keep our ecosystems healthy and thriving.
Our native plant garden at the Long Point Basin Land Trust office in Port Rowan provides important habitat and food sources for these essential species.
Every native plant added to a garden is a step toward creating a healthier landscape for pollinators.

Earlier this month, LBPLT was very pleased to host Dr. Reed Noss and other subject experts to discuss the Long Point area as a critical hub for biodiversity that provides a refuge for many species whose core range is within the broader Southern Great Lakes ecoregion.  This ecoregion spans the Canada – U.S. border and is one of the least intact and most highly converted ecoregions in North America.

The group toured a flagship LPBLT property where oak savanna has been re-established and native flora and fauna is flourishing.

Thank you to all who participated and a special thank you to the Ontario Conservation Accelerator for supporting this important gathering and helping make these conversations possible.

This workshop will explore native plant species well-suited to low-light conditions, along with practical tips for creating organic rich soils, adding logs and other features that enhance the woodland character of a garden, and using textural differences in leaf shape to design a welcoming and calming space. Learn how to support local biodiversity while enhancing the natural beauty of your landscape.

Join us this Saturday from 10am to 12pm for Sights and Sounds of Ontario Frogs.

Nature exploration leader, educator and photographer .gauthierhelmer will share knowledge about the 11 different species of frogs found in Ontario, as well as our two species of toads. Topics to be included are lifestyle, habitats, calls, and key factors for identification.

The presentation will be concluded with a short walk around the wetlands and pond at Alton Family Nature Reserve in hopes of practicing our newly acquired identification skills.
