President’s Address at PMAHA AGM … “As I reflect on this past season, I am proud of what our association accomplished together. Like every year, we faced challenges, made difficult decisions, and left some projects unfinished. In a volunteer-run organization, there is always more work than time available. Despite that, our volunteers continue to dedicate countless hours to supporting PMAHA players and families, and for that I am truly grateful.
One of our greatest successes is the continued growth of our association. Following COVID, registration dropped to around 300 players. Through five years of consistent recruitment, Try Hockey programs for hundreds of new participants, and Hockey Shop equipment credits for new players and goalies, we have steadily rebuilt our membership.
Last season, we reached 475 players.
Every division, from U7 through U21, was full. This resulted in waitlists because ice availability prevented us from adding teams. While this reflects a healthy, thriving association, it also highlights a key challenge. We have worked hard to keep hockey accessible and affordable for families in Port Moody, Anmore, and Belcarra, but future growth may be limited by ice availability. More than ever, our community needs that third sheet of ice.
We also continued finding new opportunities for our players. Last season, we partnered with Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam to field the first-ever Tri-City Hydra U18 A2 team. Along with the league’s Zone and new U13 Hub team model, these partnerships help ensure players have pathways to compete at the highest level possible. We look forward to expanding these opportunities in the future.
This past season, PMAHA hosted the U18 Final Four Championship. While it was not an event we sought out, we stepped up when called upon. Our volunteers delivered a successful event that showcased our association and community with pride.
Behind the scenes, we completed significant work to strengthen the organization. We continued updating governance documents and guidelines, including revisions to our bylaws, which will be discussed later this evening. Kathryn McMullen updated our Managers Manual, and Leah Zille has been leading updates to our Policy Manual. Though not always visible, this work is essential to keeping PMAHA well-run and sustainable.
We also maintained our commitment to supporting new families through our new player credit program, helping reduce financial barriers and improving accessibility.
This season will also mark a significant transition with the departure of Kurt as Hockey Director. On behalf of the association, I thank Kurt for his years of dedication and service. Moving forward, David Boyce will oversee player development from U11 through U18. We are excited about the experience and leadership he brings and believe he will further strengthen player development across the association.
While we can celebrate these successes, there is always more to do. New ideas, improvements, and challenges continue to emerge, and we work each year to address as many priorities as possible.
As many of you know, this meeting also marks the end of my time as President of PMAHA. Serving in this role has been a privilege, and I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together over the past several years. I have had the opportunity to work alongside dedicated volunteers who care deeply about providing a positive hockey experience for our players and families. The growth and strength of this association are a reflection of their commitment and hard work.
Finally, I would like to thank our executive, directors, coaches, managers, treasurers, volunteers, officials, and families. Everything we achieve is made possible by those who contribute their time and energy. PMAHA remains strong because of you.
Thank you for your support throughout my time as President and throughout this past season. I am confident the association is in a strong position moving forward, and I look forward to watching PMAHA continue to grow and succeed in the years ahead”
