𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧'𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗜𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘?
𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘷𝘴. 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘗𝘩𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴

The native and invasive forms of phragmites can be near-identical in appearance and are now confirmed to hybridize. Some key indicators of invasive phragmites are denser stands, larger seed heads and plants growing up to 15-feet tall.

With the support of the Ontario Phragmites Action (OPA) program, DNA testing is being conducted on phragmites stands to determine the range of both species and their hybridization.

The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA) has begun the Class Environmental Assessment process for the Garden Hill Dam, after awarding the contract to CIMA+ with sub-consultants GEO Morphix and Matrix Heritage.

In 1983, river channelization began through downtown Port Hope to contain the 1980 flood levels.

This involved widening the riverbed to accommodate the water levels experienced during the peak of the 1980 flood. Planning was also put into creating spaces to accommodate the annual salmon and trout migrations. Blasting of the riverbed took place until completion in 1986.

Not all chemical spills behave the same. Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (DNAPLs) are heavier than water, allowing them to sink deep below the surface into the ground where they can become difficult and costly to remove. Preventing releases is the best way to protect drinking water.

🦋✨ 𝟭𝟳𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗧𝗮𝗴 & 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 ✨🦋

The Port Hope & District Historical Society will be hosting the event at Dorothy's House Museum, in Garden Hill. The event will take place on August 22, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Participants will be tagging & releasing monarch butterflies to help scientists track their epic journey to Mexico. Each tiny tag tells a big story — helping protect migration routes, habitats and future generations of these endangered pollinators.
Your butterfly could even be spotted thousands of kilometres away!
