It's National Impaired Driving Prevention Week

We light Stella Quinn Crawford from Eckville, Alberta whose life was taken by an impaired driver on April 15, 2023๐Ÿ•ฏ

There is no footprint too small that it cannot leave an imprint on this world ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

Before you drive impaired, please ask yourself if you are prepared to be the one that destroys someoneโ€™s entire world ๐ŸŒŽ

We miss you everyday ๐Ÿชฝ๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿ’”

There is a perception among some that impaired driving is not a significant problem in Canada. The numbers tell a very different story.
๐Ÿชช An average of 9 federal criminal charges and provincial short-term licence suspensions are laid for impaired driving every single hour in Canada.

๐ŸšจAn average of 206 impaired driving charges and short-term suspensions are laid daily.

๐Ÿš“ 78,480 total impaired driving charges and short-term suspensions are laid annually;

While impaired driving has declined over the years, these statistics show just how prevalent and critical the problem remains.

Beyond those statistics are the innocent victims and survivors of impaired driving. Every year, hundreds of people are killed and thousands are injured in alcohol and/or drug-related crashes.

These senseless deaths and injuries are 100% preventable.

A traffic stop conducted by RCMP Northwest Traffic Services for excessive speed resulted in a person arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

On February 28 at approximately 9:55 p.m., an RCMP Northwest Traffic Services officer was conducting proactive patrols on Hwy. 102 near Brookfield when they observed an SUV travelling at speeds that appeared to be significantly over the posted speed limit of 110km/h.

Radar confirmed that the brown Volkswagen Tiguan was travelling at approximately 199km/h.

The officer safely conducted a traffic stop at a highway offramp. During the traffic stop, the officer noted that the driver and only occupant showed signs of impairment by alcohol. The driver, a 46-year-old man from Arisaig, provided a roadside breath sample into an approved screening device (ASD) which resulted in a โ€œfail.โ€
He was arrested and transported to the Colchester County District RCMP Detachment in Bible Hill. He provided breath samples that registered 130mg% and 120mg%.

The man will face charges for impaired operation and was released pending a future court appearance scheduled in April. He was also issued a summary offence ticket under the provincial Motor Vehicle Act for stunting, which comes with a fine of $2422.50.

Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of deaths on Nova Scotia roadways. To report a suspected impaired driver or other safety concerns on our highways, roads, and streets, call 911.

Impaired driving, whether by alcohol, cannabis, prescription medication, or other drugs, doesnโ€™t just โ€œhappen.โ€ And it doesnโ€™t only impact one person. It can devastate families, friends, coworkers, and entire communities.

๐Ÿš”๐Ÿ’” Our officers see those impacts up close โ€“ and too often.

โ€œItโ€™s certainly a personal issue for me. I lost a friend of mine who was a police officer. She was killed by a drunk driver in B.C., while on duty.โ€ -S/Sgt. Ed Nugent.

โœ… Before you drive, make a plan:
๐Ÿš• Choose your ride home first: designated driver, taxi/rideshare, transit, or a safe place to stay
โš ๏ธ Donโ€™t mix substances. Alcohol + cannabis/meds can multiply impairment
๐Ÿ“‹ Read medication warnings and ask your pharmacist/doctor if youโ€™re safe to drive
๐Ÿšซ If youโ€™ve used cannabis or other drugs, donโ€™t drive. Feeling โ€œokayโ€ isnโ€™t the same as being sober.

๐ŸŽ‰ Be a good host: Offer non-alcohol options, help arrange rides, and take the keys if someone shouldnโ€™t be driving
If you see an impaired driver? Call 911 ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿšจ

This weekend officers will continue to be out and about, checking for impaired drivers on roadways across the province.

Hereโ€™s just one example of what can happen if you choose to drive impaired:

On New Yearโ€™s Eve, RCMP Northwest Traffic Services responded to a report that a pickup truck was travelling at a high rate of speed on Hwy 102 when the driver lost control and the truck flipped.

Upon arrival, officers noted the driver, a 43-year-old man of Antigonish County, was showing signs of impairment. The man provided a breath sample into a roadside screening device, which returned a โ€œfail.โ€ He was safely arrested and transported to the RCMP Bible Hill Detachment where he provided additional breath samples, which showed levels of 270mg% and 260mg%.

The driver was charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Operating a Vehicle While Over 80mg%. He is scheduled to appear in Truro Provincial Court in March.

Thankfully, no one was injured in the crash.
