May was our most exciting month last year!
On May 9th, the cadets and staff from our squadron (719 Stora) toured and took flight on a CC130-J Hercules aircraft at the Port Hawkesbury Airport. The aircraft came from 426 Transport Training Squadron in Trenton, Ontario, with a previous Port Hawkesbury resident Bill Griffin organizing this opportunity.
Cadet Warrant Officer Second Class Carson McKenzie said βOur squadron's flight in the CC-130J was the most exciting and inspiring experience I've had. As an aspiring pilot and proud Air Cadet, getting airborne in such a cool aircraft and seeing our beautiful island was an experience I will never forget.β He has since earned his pilotβs license!!! πβοΈ
We even saw a demonstration of the rear door opening, which gave us an unobstructed view of our incredible Cape Breton landscape.
Cadet Sergeant Cooper Wood, added "I recognize that seeing a military cargo plane like this, especially in Cape Breton, is really, really rare. Getting to fly around the island in one, meet a Herc' flight crew, see the cockpit in action, that's a whole different ball game. It is amazing. It really is a massive pump of adrenaline and excitement when that back door swings down."
These events allow cadets to further their understanding of the principles of flight, the importance of learning science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and how that can impact their future career choices. The cadet program allows youth to safely explore unique opportunities that they would be unable to experience anywhere else.
