MEDIA RELEASE | The Province of Ontario has formally approved changes to Port Colborne’s ward boundaries and City Council composition ahead of the 2026 municipal election.

The approved changes follow a March 2026 decision by Port Colborne City Council to support a reduction in the size of Council and implement a new ward structure based on the City’s 2025 Ward Boundary and Council Composition Review.

As a result, Port Colborne voters will elect six City Councillors and a Mayor when they go to the polls for the 2026 municipal election, replacing the current structure of eight councillors and a mayor.

Under the newly approved model, the City will be divided into three wards, each represented by two councillors. Two wards will represent Port Colborne’s urban neighbourhoods, while one ward will represent the rural area of the city. The wards were designed to reflect communities of interest while maintaining balanced population representation.

Because the deadline under the Municipal Act for municipalities to independently implement changes before the 2026 election had passed, provincial approval was required for the new structure to proceed.

The regulations enacted by the Province are now in full force and effect for the 2026–2030 term of Council.

An interactive online map is being finalized and will allow residents to search their address and confirm their ward. The tool is expected to be available on the City’s website later this week.

The ward boundary review process originally began in 2025 and included public engagement and resident feedback related to council composition and representation.
