Muskoka Lakes Association

Muskoka Lakes Association Established in 1894, The Muskoka Lakes Association is Canada's oldest cottager association.

The MLA's mission is to promote the responsible use, enjoyment and conservation of the unique Muskoka environment. Founded in 1894, the Muskoka Lakes Association (MLA) was established by a prominent group of citizens from Toronto and Hamilton who summered in what is now the Township of Muskoka Lakes (TML). Its goals then were to protect and promote the interests of the residents, to preserve the h

ealthful sanitary condition and scenic beauty of the area and to encourage aquatic and other sports. Early concerns included transportation (rail and steamships), fishing and hunting, sanitation and sewage, and property taxes; issues that remain just as prevalent today, albeit for different reasons. Throughout the years the MLA has remained active in the protection of the environment. Water quality monitoring began in the 1960’s and continues today, measuring phosphorus, bacteria and calcium levels. The MLA was instrumental in the creation of the Coalition on Acid Rain which successfully lobbied for laws regarding acid rain in both Canada and the United States in the 1980’s. Land use development is closely scrutinized and local government and developers have been strongly influenced by the MLA’s input. Recreational safety has always been of great importance to the MLA, which, through education and example, has encouraged safe and respectful boating practices for over 100 years. The first annual regatta was held at the Windermere Hotel on Lake Rosseau and was reported to be the most successful regatta in Muskoka history. At that time it included motor boat and sail boat races, as well as swimming and paddling events. Motor boat races have long since ceased, and sailing is now celebrated at its own regatta in August. In 1920, a group of MLA members purchased a property and opened the Muskoka Lakes Golf Club (now the Muskoka Lakes Golf & Country Club), which became the permanent home of the annual MLA regatta. After 122 years, the aquatic regatta remains the longest continuously run regatta in Canada. The MLA, Canada’s oldest cottage association, continues to promote the responsible use, enjoyment and conservation of the unique Muskoka environment. We protect and promote water quality:
The MLA operates the most comprehensive water monitoring program of any lake association in Canada. Known as the MLA Water Quality Initiative, this program focuses on the near shore, where members access water near their residences. The MLA shares this data with district and municipal governments, and when issues arise, works with a variety of stakeholders to find solutions. We advocate for responsible government spending and fair taxation:
The MLA believes fair waterfront taxation depends on responsible, efficient spending by district, municipal and provincial governments. We promote responsible land use:
The MLA advocates for strong environmental standards and smart, forward-thinking land use and development planning that respects the unique character of Muskoka’s communities. We lead on important Muskoka issues:
The MLA participates in the efforts of Muskoka’s district and municipal governments, reporting back to members and taking action on issues that affect waterfront property owners. We promote the fun side of cottaging:
Through self-funded activities like the aquatic regatta, sail boat races, biennial antique boat show and annual bonspiel, we host several events that encourage fun and adventure in Muskoka. We support the local business community:
The MLA Advantage Card encourages members to ‘Stock up in Muskoka’ and receive preferential pricing and special promotions from over 100 restaurants, retailers and service providers throughout Muskoka. We communicate important and interesting information:
Through our annual yearbook, quarterly newsletters, monthly e-blasts, our website and social media, we keep members up to date on issues and developments in Muskoka.
