Students from grade 7 & 8 classes at Eben-Ezer Christian School in Campden, Ontario had a special treat on Friday because Ojibwa was in the throes of the last day of the spring work party week. Submariners and friends of Ojibwa were painting the parts of the sub that suffered from the cold winter and working on the three seacans that will form a new museum of submarine and submariner artifacts which will open this summer. Two submariners took time out to guide the student tours of the submarine. The girls tour of Ojibwa was led by Jerry Brown while the boys were led by Fred Rowe. There were lots of great questions.

Time to salute Laura Drexler, a dedicated fan, who deeply respects the efforts of veterans and goes out of her way to spread her enthusiasm with her students in the Toronto School Board system. Laura visited us last year bearing goodies and helped with the painting tasks. This year, she drove all the way from Milton bearing more goodies and prepared to collect more submariner stories. Laura is passionate about bringing a truly personal flavour of navy life during the cold war to her history students. The gifts included delicious goodies and touching thank you cards for each submariner. More later about what we have planned for the poppy seeds she donated to us.

Work Party Spring 2026 Day One
The compound is always buzzing during work party week. It is amazing how much was accomplished in the intense heat. Day One was dedicated to setting up the meal operations, finding the sweet spot of shade (under the bow of Ojibwa) and preparing the surface of Ojibwa for painting the surfaces of Ojibwa where the paint popped off in the crazy range of temperature during winter days at Ojibwa. The differential over just a few hours can be brutal!

It's Spring Work Party Week at HMCS Ojibwa. So take advantage of this weekend and next when you may meet some of the retired submariners and interested volunteers who gather to work on various projects around the submarine and our site. You may catch them as they arrive for a week of working on the boat and the seacans or as they pack up after an exhausting week next weekend. Don't get me wrong, the fire pit will get its evening work out and 'dits' (submariner tales) and laughter will fill the air. Monday to Friday (June 8th to 12th) Ojibwa will be closed to visitors due to the heavy equipment and projects all over the boat and the compound.

Last Saturday was a big day for us as we welcomed Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps from Napanee, Ontario and Etobicoke, in the Greater Toronto Region. Kudos to our new friends from Napanee who left home at 4:30 AM to get here! Here is a selection of images from the visit. It was great to have them aboard.
