Wild Tide West Coast Society Is Officially Incorporated!

Wild Tide West Coast Society is now formally incorporated under the BC Societies Act — a major milestone in bringing our coastal community vision to life. With our incorporation complete, we’re moving forward with building a space dedicated to connection, discovery, and community impact here on the West Coast.

As we grow, we’re inviting our community to help shape the future of this new society.

We’re recruiting two volunteer Board Members.

If you’re passionate about community building, coastal ecosystems, education, or helping launch a meaningful nonprofit from the ground up, we’d love to hear from you. These roles are foundational and will help guide Wild Tide’s governance, strategy, and long‑term direction.

She'd been watching the horizon for twenty minutes. Then the dorsal fin broke the surface six feet off the bow, and her whole face changed.

Mouth open. Hand pressed flat to her chest. She forgot to lift her camera.

That's the thing about your first wild orca in the Alberni Inlet. You can read about them, watch documentaries, scroll a hundred photos. None of it prepares you for the sound of breath, that close, in waters the Tseshaht and Hupacasath nations have known and stewarded since time before memory.

The coast looks different on the boat ride back. Quieter. Bigger. Like you've been let in on something.

The hummingbirds have shifted into a different gear this week.

If you have a feeder up in the Alberni Valley, you have probably noticed it already. The visits are faster. More frequent. And the birds are far less patient with each other than they were a month ago.

There is a reason for the chaos. Mid-June is peak Rufous hummingbird season on Vancouver Island. Adults are deep in breeding mode, and the first juveniles are just beginning to fledge, which means more tiny bodies competing for the same sugar water and the same nectar-rich blooms.

It is also a narrow window. Rufous hummingbirds start their southward migration as early as late July, so the valley only gets a few vivid weeks of this. Right now is the loudest, busiest stretch of their whole year here.

Take a few minutes this weekend to sit near a feeder or a patch of salmonberry and just watch. Notice who chases whom, who waits their turn, who shows up with brand-new feathers. The ecosystem is telling a story, and right now it is talking fast. 🐦

We almost drove past a black bear fishing the Stamp River because we were scanning the tree line instead of the water's edge.

Turns out, that's lesson one. There are two more.

Visitors keep telling us the same thing: the Alberni Valley shows itself to the people who slow down and shift their gaze. Watch the gravel bars when the salmon run. Look up before you look out. Let the river tell you who's nearby.

In October, a grade 5 class read about intertidal zones in a textbook. In May, they crouched beside a tidal pool in Barkley Sound and found a purple sea urchin. One kid said it was the first time science felt real. 🌊

That sentence has stayed with us.

Classroom learning matters. It builds the foundation, introduces the vocabulary, reaches large groups, and fits inside a school day. We're grateful for the teachers doing that work.

Immersive learning does something different. It builds memory through the senses. Cold saltwater on your fingers. The smell of kelp drying on the rocks. The flash of a shore crab disappearing under a stone. Kids (and adults) remember what they touched and discovered themselves, and that memory becomes the root of lasting care for a place.

Neither replaces the other. The textbook gives you the map. The shoreline gives you the reason to protect it.

A family walked the Stamp River trail for three hours last July and spotted two birds. The next morning, with a guide, they saw a black bear, a river otter, and a great blue heron. Same trail. Ninety minutes.

The difference wasn't luck. It was knowing where the otter slides into the current, which cedar the heron favours at low light, and how to read the quiet before a bear moves through the brush.

That's the gift of a guided walk in the Alberni Valley. You don't just see more. You understand what you're looking at, the relationships between species, the seasons, and the territories of the Tseshaht and Hupacasath nations who have stewarded this land since long before any of us arrived.

But solo walks have their own magic. Slow mornings on the Somass. Time to set up a tripod. The kind of quiet where you hear the river before you see it. For experienced naturalists and anyone craving their own pace, going alone is a gift too.

An orca's dorsal fin can stand taller than a grown adult. When one rises beside your boat off Barkley Sound, most people gasp before they really understand what they're seeing.

Whale watching season is back on the west coast, and the waters around Vancouver Island are one of the most significant orca habitats in the world. For a lot of families this summer, it will be a first encounter.

We pulled together three things that change how you watch them once you know:

🐋 Every dorsal fin is a fingerprint, and some of the orcas out there have been named and tracked for over 40 years.
🐋 Those pods aren't random. They're grandmothers, mothers, and siblings travelling together for life.
🐋 Their silence in a bay tells you as much as their presence does, especially when it comes to Chinook salmon.
