Adult members work with senior cadets to make the program function and provide overall direction and activity. Most adults working choose to enroll in the Canadian Forces as members of the Cadet Instructors Cadre, a branch of the Canadian Forces responsible for the supervision and administration of the cadet program. Members who enroll work toward a Canadian Forces commission - the legal document that authorizes officers at or above the rank of Second Lieutenant in Canada's Armed Forces to exercise command responsibility. Members who choose not to enroll may still work as civilian volunteers. Before working directly with cadets, all adults must complete extensive background checks and suitability screening.
