The Bread of Life Centre

The Bread of Life Centre is a place of last resort for anyone in Port Alberni who needs a meal, companionship, and support.Every day we:
• Serve hot, nutritious meals to all who come
• Provide a place where all feel safe and welcome
• Provide referral to community services as the need arises

The centre also provides:
• Medical services three days a week, with nurses, a doctor and mental health wo

rkers.
• A daily food recovery of gleaned goods that we use to prepare meals and then give the surplus to other agencies or as give away food to our clients. No government funding
We are supported entirely by Port Alberni citizens and businesses. We do not use Government funds, including gaming grants, recognizing that many of our guests have gambling issues. The Centre depends on the daily help of volunteers to keep the doors open. Without them we could not meet our goals. Many of our guests volunteer to help and we have a cadre of community folks who turn up to help with special events and fundraising

Our Origins

Founded as a soup kitchen in 1983 and moved to 3rd Avenue by the indomitable Vera Seidel, the centre was incorporated as a Society in 1997 with a board of directors from churches in the Valley. Since then we have grown from “just a soup kitchen” to a community multiple resource center. Our board members come from all walks of life. They are people who have a concern for their fellow citizens in need.
