๐ŸŒˆJune marks the beginning of ๐™‹๐™๐™„๐˜ฟ๐™€ ๐™Ž๐™€๐˜ผ๐™Ž๐™Š๐™‰

Pride Season refers to the wide range of Pride events that take place from June to September, when 2SLGBTQI+ people and their allies come together to highlight the resilience, celebrate the talent, and recognize their communitiesโ€™ contributions. Although special attention is put on the Pride events during the summer months, they happen throughout the year in many communities.

Historically, Pride gatherings emerged from the first large-scale protests for 2SLGBTQI+ rights. In Canada, the first demonstrations took place in Ottawa and Vancouver in 1971. By 1973, Pride events were held in several Canadian cities, including Montreal, Ottawa, Saskatoon, Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg. Toronto's Pride weekend in June is now among the largest Pride events in North America.

Happy Pride Season!

This year, will be marked by an event held at United Nations Headquarters in New York, alongside a major international meeting on the rights of persons with disabilities.

As populations age, more people with disabilities are growing older, and many older persons develop disabilities later in life. This overlap calls for closer coordination between efforts on ageing and disability, especially in areas such as protection, care, and community-based supportโ€”all of which are essential to addressing elder abuse.

Elder abuse remains widely under-recognized and under-reported. It can take many forms, including physical, psychological, and financial abuse, as well as neglect. It often occurs in situations where individuals lack visibility, support, or access to services. Addressing this issue requires more than raising awareness. It calls for stronger systems that can prevent abuse and respond effectively when it happens, while respecting the dignity, independence, and rights of older persons.

Men have been taught to stay strong, keep emotions to themselves, and โ€œman upโ€ when things get tough, to the detriment of their own well-being and sometimes that of others. But behind that pressure is a growing mental health crisis for men, who too often do not receive the treatment and supports they need.

Mental health struggles among men are common, yet many men donโ€™t seek support, even when they are experiencing emotional distress. This too often leads to problems with substance use health, addictions, social isolation, unhealthy relationship patterns and violence.

Fast facts about menโ€™s mental health

โ–ช๏ธŽMen in Canada account for nearly 75% of su***de deaths and die by su***de at three times the rate of women.
โ–ช๏ธŽMen are more likely to use substances on a regular basis. In 2024, 60.9% of men said they were regular drinkers compared to 49% of women.
โ–ช๏ธŽMen and boys are more likely to gamble and are at moderate-to-severe risk of gambling problems.
โ–ช๏ธŽMen are more likely to use substances on a regular basis and more men than women die each year from toxic drug poisonings. They make up 72% of all opioid toxicity deaths.

These numbers point to a terrible reality: too many men are struggling in silence, and donโ€™t feel they can ask for help. Access to services is further compounded for racialized and Indigenous men who, due to social and economic inequities stemming from racism and colonialism, may lack culturally appropriate and accessible care and supports.

๐Ÿ‘”This June, get your ๐™Ž๐™ช๐™จ๐™ฅ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™™๐™š๐™ง๐™จ ๐™Š๐™ฃ for someone you care about.

๐™Ž๐™ช๐™จ๐™ฅ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™™๐™š๐™ง๐™จ ๐™Š๐™ฃ is a Canadian Menโ€™s Health Foundation campaign for Menโ€™s Health Month. Itโ€™s a simple, visible way to show up for the men in your life and help start the conversations that matter.

๐Ÿ‘จTalking about menโ€™s health isnโ€™t always easy. Sometimes itโ€™s easier to just not talk about it at all, or to pretend nothingโ€™s wrong. Sometimes menโ€™s health just needs a nudge. A check-in, conversation or reminder that putting things off doesnโ€™t make them go away.

Too many men wait too long to talk about their health, ask for support or take action when something doesnโ€™t feel right.

๐Ÿ‘”๐™Ž๐™ช๐™จ๐™ฅ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™™๐™š๐™ง๐™จ ๐™Š๐™ฃ uses a simple sign of support to start an important conversation and remind men they donโ€™t have to deal with health alone.

๐ŸชถJune is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, an opportunity to learn about the unique cultures, traditions and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Mรฉtis who have lived on this land since time immemorial and whose presence continues to shape Canada today. It is also a moment for reflection and to recognize the ongoing impacts of colonization and to reflect on how we can all contribute to reconciliation.

The campaign dates back to 2009, when the House of Commons designated June as National Aboriginal History Month. The name was changed to National Indigenous History Month in 2017

--- Join the Rally with us ๐Ÿ’ซ

๐Ÿ“ฃPort Alberni is in the running for something big. The City has advanced in the casting process for Home Town Takeover Canada โ€” HGTV's first Canadian edition of the hit renovation series. If selected, our community would see homes, businesses, and public spaces transformed on national television. That's not just a makeover. That's a spotlight on everything the Alberni Valley has to offer.

Now the City is calling on all of us for one final push.

๐ŸŽ‰Join the community rally at Harbour Quay (5440 Argyle Street) on Tuesday, June 9 from 8:00โ€“11:00 a.m. The City of Port Alberni, Tseshaht First Nation, and Hupacasath First Nation are coming together to show the producers exactly what kind of community we are and they need your numbers to make it count.

๐ŸŽˆ It's a full block party: Tseshaht and Hupacasath singers and dancers, children's activities, crafts and face painting, banners to make or take, and a sea of green, white and orange. Harbour Quay will be closed to vehicle traffic from 7:00โ€“11:00 a.m. to make room for all of it.

Bring your staff, your customers, your family. Wear your City colours. Show up and be counted.

SEE YOU THERE!

Mental health is about more than getting through the dayโ€”it's about creating small habits that help us thrive.

Taking breaks, staying connected, getting outdoors, celebrating your successes, and checking in with yourself can all make a meaningful difference to your overall well-being.

Remember: you don't have to do everything at once. Small steps can lead to positive change.
If you or someone you know could use support, resources are available. ๐Ÿ’š
