2558 Placentia RCACC Celebrating 70 Years of Service and Leadership
On November 1, 2025, the 2558 Placentia Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps proudly marks its 70th anniversary, celebrating seven decades of youth leadership, citizenship, and community service.
The corps was founded on November 1, 1955, under the command of Captain William F. Collins, with John Whelan as staff member. Meeting every Saturday at the Star of the Sea Hall, about 30 young men, ages 13 to 17, trained in drill and discipline—often on the town tennis court, weather permitting. Their dedication laid the foundation for what would become one of Placentia’s most enduring youth organizations.
From its early khaki uniforms and simple beginnings, 2558 has grown into a respected corps that has welcomed almost 3,000 cadets through its ranks. Today, it is proudly sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion, Dr. William Collingwood Memorial Branch 33 and the Sponsor Support Committee, and is affiliated with the 1st Battalion, Royal Newfoundland Regiment.
Through the decades, 2558 Placentia has continued to uphold the goals of the Army Cadet Program—developing leadership, promoting physical fitness, and fostering good citizenship. Cadets participate in adventure training, music, marksmanship, environmental projects, and community service, building confidence and responsibility that last a lifetime.
Throughout November 2025, the corps will share photos and memories from the past 70 years to honour its history and celebrate the many cadets, officers, and community members who have contributed to its success.
As 2558 Placentia celebrates 70 years of service, it continues to inspire young people to serve their community and country with loyalty, professionalism, mutual respect, and integrity—values that remain as strong in Placentia today as they were in 1955.
