We invite you to join us at the new park (part of the Cape to Cape trail network) on the top of Fitzpatrick Mountain featuring a great view of the Northumberland Strait. The park is a place for people enjoying the trail to relax, enjoy the view and hopefully, to reflect. It is part of our tribute to the memory of a wonderful leader of the recreational trails movement in Pictou County, everyone's favourite trail companion, Elaine Falconer. We hope you will join us and Elaine's family on Saturday, June 22 at 2:00 pm (rain or shine) for a celebratory opening of this fitting tribute. Light refreshments to follow. LOCATION: (driving - we will post signs) from Scotsburn take the Durham Rd., turn onto the Millsville Rd. and proceed about 8 km before turning right on the Irving Young Rd. (gravel). Then turn right on Tower Rd. until you see our signage on an unnamed road on the left. Please share.

The Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) is an invasive species decimating Hemlock stands in southwestern Nova Scotia. This aphid-like insect attacks and kills hemlock trees by feeding on nutrient and water storage cells at the base of needles. The HWA is expected to arrive in Pictou County within the next year or two. Awareness and education are our best defenses against this invasive bug.
The Pictou County Trails Association, with support from the Municipality of Pictou County and the Town of New Glasgow, have arranged for presentations and a demonstration by Forest Ecologist, Donna Crossland, to help us prepare for this assault on our forests. Join us for her presentation on Thursday evening May 9th at 7:00 PM at Glasgow Square in New Glasgow or for the day on Friday May 10th from 9:30 to 4:00 at the Scotsburn Fire Hall. Donna’s presentation will take place in the morning. On Friday afternoon we will go to a hemlock forest, a short walk from the fire hall, for a demonstration on how the hemlock trees can be inoculated against the HWA. Donna will also address the role of hurricanes and windstorms in the health of forest ecosystems.
This event will be of great interest to all who own woodlots or enjoy our forests recreationally.

"Hunting season" is longer than we think. Even though bow and muzzle loader hunting involves fewer participants we should always exercise caution. Please observe any trail closed notices and wear hunter orange. Hunters who know what they are doing prefer early morning and late afternoon hours. Timing your outings more towards mid-day is advisable.
