Check out the book “Great Gardens in Ontario” and you'll find listed for Prince Edward County a marvelous series of gardens at BLACK WALNUT EDUCATIONAL GARDENS near Milford. There are 28 gardens, many of them raised beds. There is a medicinal garden, a kitchen garden and most remarkably a FRAGRANT TACTILE GARDEN designed for the visually challenged (and others). The Fragrant Tactile Garden is a wo
nderful opportunity to experience the textures, smells and atmosphere of a magical specially crafted garden. With many other unique and lovely garden rooms this is a place both inspiring and unexpected. Flower, vegetable and herb gardens are sources of information for programs on environmental ecosystems and health and herb workshops. Organic and multipurpose, seniors interact here with "at risk youth". A most interesting - in the garden - senior’s library, is currently in the works. CONCERTS, WORKSHOPS, TOURS and CLASSES all happen amidst beautiful flowers, unusual vegetables, extensive herbs and a woodland forest leading to the Black River. As a registered non-profit, tours and much of what goes on here is free of charge. Donations are always appreciated. Volunteers sometimes come for the day or camp on the property for a different experience. Everyone leaves with botanical presents, learned experience, and a contribution to a sensitive approach to what gardens are about.
