Fairport Yacht Club was originally incorporated in 1984 by a group of sailing and power boating enthusiasts operating out of Port Pickering Marina. The club’s name was inspired by the historic Village of Fairport, located at the foot of Liverpool Road in Pickering on the eastern shore of Frenchman’s Bay.
The club flourished for many years before facing a significant challenge in the late 1990s when Port Pickering Marina closed and the property was acquired by the City of Pickering for parkland development. Fairport Yacht Club subsequently relocated to East Shore Marina and continued its activities; however, member participation gradually declined and the club became inactive.
Just as the club’s charter was at risk of being revoked, a dedicated group of members stepped forward to preserve its legacy. They assumed responsibility for the organization, filed the outstanding corporate returns, and maintained the club’s charter while a new vision for the future was being developed.
In 2004, Fairport Yacht Club returned to Frenchman’s Bay and established its home at Ontario’s first registered Dockominium. The 56-slip Dockominium is situated on the eastern shore of the bay, just north of Frenchman’s Bay Marina, and features modern docks and first-class facilities. It remains unique as one of the few marinas on Lake Ontario where individual boat slips are privately owned.
Today, Fairport Yacht Club serves as the social, cruising, and boating hub for Dockominium owners and tenants who choose to participate in the club’s activities, fostering a strong sense of community and a shared passion for life on the water.
Over the years, we have welcomed many new owners, members, tenants, and guests to our waterfront community. As with any growing community, not everyone is immediately familiar with the Dockominium’s rules and established practices. For this reason, it is important that we assist newcomers in understanding these guidelines so that reminders are viewed as helpful and informative rather than personal criticism.
To support this effort, the Dock Rules will be posted on the bulletin board located inside the front gate on the north wall for easy reference.
One area that deserves particular attention is the front entrance gate. The gate is spring-loaded and closes automatically. If allowed to slam shut, it creates vibrations that can be felt by dock owners and tenants located closest to the entrance. As a matter of courtesy and consideration for fellow members, everyone is asked to ensure that the gate closes gently.
Dock owners and tenants are responsible for informing their family members, visitors, and guests of this expectation. The last person passing through the gate should always take a moment to ensure that it closes quietly and securely. This small gesture contributes significantly to maintaining the peaceful and respectful environment that all members enjoy and appreciate.
