All season, volunteers and GreenUP staff have been removing common buckthorn and other invasive species from a 4,800 metre-squared section of woodland at GreenUP Ecology Park. Join us on Wednesday, September 9th, to continue re-naturalizing this important green space along the Trans Canada Trail.

You'll learn how to identify common buckthorn and develop multiple strategies for removing it — skills you can apply at home, school, or your workplace.

Whoops! "Which hazel(nut)" are you growing?

Some of our witch hazel shrubs were mislabeled and are in fact hazelnuts. How embarrassing.

If you purchased a witch hazel at GreenUP Ecology Park this season, and are now looking at some tasty nuts, contact us at [email protected] or (705) 927-1104 so we can rectify the mistake.

P.S. The native plant nursery is open Thursday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Friday, Oct. 9th. Swing by to take advantage of sales on most of our stock... just not witch hazels.

🌿 A place where kids can explore, learn and connect with nature.

GreenUP Ecology Park gives children the opportunity to step away from screens and experience the outdoors firsthand. They can explore gardens, discover plants and wildlife, get their hands dirty and learn about the natural world around them. 🌱🐝

These experiences can spark a curiosity and appreciation for nature that stays with them for years.

💚 By supporting GreenUP Ecology Park, you’re helping ensure that children and families in our community continue to have a special place to learn, explore and grow.

We were lucky recently to welcome our Whitby neighbour Bob Willard who stopped by GreenUP for a visit.

Bob is a leading global expert on quantifying the business value of sustainability strategies. With a career that includes 34 years at IBM Canada before turning his focus to helping organizations build the business case for going green, he had much insight and knowledge to share.

With his deep interest in the value of energy efficiency, we told Bob about our new joint Green Economy Peterborough and Energy Program pilot to coach small businesses to implement energy efficiency strategies.

Thank you for stopping by, Bob! Find out more about what we do at the link below!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for the return of GreenUP’s Family Night! 🌿

It was wonderful to see so many families exploring, playing, and connecting with nature together at Ecology Park. 💚

The evening was packed with fun, including a delicious picnic dinner, a kid-friendly tree tour with Ecology Park program coordinator Jonathan Armstrong, face painting, bubble-making, and a performance of Call of the Garden by Glen Caradus, the Paddling Puppeteer!

We wrapped up the evening with a magical lantern walk through the forest, led by our very own Cool Captain Climate.

We also introduced several new pop-up free-play centres, giving families a chance to explore some tactile activities that are being prototyped for the park.

This Family Night was part of a co-design process supported by a Free to Play grant. Supported by the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough through the Community Foundations of Canada, the initiative is designed to encourage children to spend time exploring the outdoors.

The enthusiasm and engagement with both our existing features and new prototype activities gave us incredibly valuable insight. Kids and families are the experts on play, and we learned so much about the spaces, experiences, and activities that would bring even more outdoor wonder to Ecology Park.

Look out for our upcoming family survey, which will continue to help shape this project.

Thank you for playing, exploring, and dreaming with us! We can’t wait to gather again.
