Have you had a chance to read our 2025 Highlights Report?

One story from the report that has really stayed with us is about TRACKS (Trent Aboriginal Cultural Knowledge and Science).

Each year, TRACKS reaches more than 3,000 Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth through hands-on environmental education grounded in both Indigenous Knowledge and Western science.

What stands out is how learning happens. Young people learn directly from the land, guided by instructors and Elders, while older youth step into leadership roles by mentoring younger participants. It's a model built on relationships, responsibility, and care.

At a time when conversations about climate change and reconciliation can feel overwhelming, TRACKS offers something hopeful: young people learning together, caring for the land, and carrying that knowledge forward.

It's one of many stories featured in our 2025 Highlights Report. We hope you'll take a few minutes to read it.

Last year, we marked a milestone - fifteen years of local generosity at work in our community. It was a year worth celebrating, and a year worth remembering.

Our 15th Anniversary Highlights Report captures what that year looked like: the donors who gave, the organizations we supported, the needs we helped meet, and the quiet, steady proof that community-minded people can shape something lasting.

We hope you find it as meaningful as we do

It’s the Friday before the May long weekend, and honestly, this might be one of the best reminders we could share: get outside!

The Peterborough Field Naturalists have spent decades helping people of all ages slow down, look a little closer, and reconnect with the natural world around them. From birding walks and fungi hikes to butterfly counts and family nature packs at the library, they’re helping make curiosity, discovery, and stewardship part of community life.

Whether it’s a walk through Ecology Park, spotting birds at Little Lake, or simply sitting quietly under a tree this weekend, nature has a way of grounding us.

Wishing everyone a safe, restful, and wonder-filled long weekend.

Fund Friday: The Joan and Margaret Fund

Community theatre is built by far more than the people under the lights. It’s sustained by the volunteers who organize, sort, build, plan, encourage, and quietly keep everything moving behind the scenes.

For many years, Joan McRae and Margaret Carley were two of those people at the Peterborough Theatre Guild. They worked backstage, managed props, organized festivals, sold tickets by hand in the pre-computer era, and helped create the kind of welcoming creative community that keeps local theatre alive.

Now their legacy will continue through the Joan and Margaret Fund, established at the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough by their sons, playwright Dave Carley and Doug McRae.

The Fund will support the development of actors, directors, and volunteers at the Guild, helping ensure future generations can learn the many skills community theatre depends on.

We’re honoured to help carry forward Joan and Margaret’s legacy, and to celebrate the volunteers who quietly keep community theatre alive, one production at a time.

Applications are now open for our Event Sponsorship Grant Program.

Each year, the Community Foundation supports local arts organizations that bring people together through events, performances, and shared cultural experiences.

We offer a limited number of sponsorships for public-facing events that are inclusive, accessible, and open to the community. Last year, support ranged from $300 to $2,000.

If you’re planning an event between now and early 2027, we encourage you to apply.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis from May 1 to September 4.

A few things to keep in mind:

• Applicants must be a qualified donee with a CRA charitable registration number
• This program supports events, not operating costs or fundraising activities
• Political, religious, and conference-style events are not eligible

If you’re unsure about eligibility or need help with your application, reach out. We’re happy to talk it through.

The full guidelines and application link are found here: https://cfgp.ca/event-sponsorship-program/

As part of this year’s One Book, One Ptbo, author Diana Beresford-Kroeger issued a simple challenge: plant six trees and help restore our local canopy. An incredibly compelling and timely suggestion after the devastating spring ice storm and a hot, dry summer

This past weekend, that challenge came to life. More than 70 people joined us at the Peterborough Public Library and left with seedling trees ready to plant. With support from Green Up, participants learned about native species and how to care for them as they grow.

“There is no such thing as a hopeless situation… Positive action, no matter how small, builds towards your bigger goals.”
- Diana Beresford-Kroeger, To Speak for the Trees

We love it when we see great ideas carried out of auditoriums, board rooms, and meeting spaces and then implemented in our own neighbourhoods.

We’re grateful to everyone who took part, and to the donors who made this possible.

We look forward to next year’s One Book, One Ptbo, and to whatever takes root next.
