Have your say on Canada's Next Policy Framework (NPF) for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The NPF is a 5-year (2028–2033) federal, provincial and territorial (FPT) investment aimed at strengthening and growing Canada's agriculture and agri-food sector.

You can help guide this policy, and drive greater support to the areas of concern you see shaping Canadian farming. The Ecological Farmers' Association of Ontario has put together guiding responses here: https://efao.ca/shaping-the-future-of-agriculture-2026/

Farms at Work lends our support to these statements of priority:

- Generational renewal: A coordinated strategy is urgently needed to support new farmers and inter-generational farm succession to ensure that we have food sovereignty into the future.
- Local food system development: While Canada’s agricultural policy has historically prioritized export market development and support for large scale agriculture, we would also like to see support for local food systems and small/medium sized enterprises prioritized in the NPF.

Your voice now can help guide support to local farms and organizations who can make an impact.

The balancing act of farm economics plays out as farmland values increase and farmland leases are negotiated. Stay up to date with the most recent data on Farmland Rental values in Canada.

Use https://FindFarmland.ca to search for your next rental opportunity or to list your land for lease. And check out the Resources section for our free Making Good Farmland Agreements Guide to help you navigate the full spectrum of lease negotiations!

Land values are climbing, but rental rates aren’t keeping up, and that matters for producer's bottom line.

For many operations, renting is still a practical way to grow, offering stable cash flow advantages despite tighter margins. The key is knowing when to rent, when to buy, and how each choice impacts your operation in the long run.

Fair Food Prices? Fair for who? Check out this important report from NFU Canada.

"This report identifies the causes of food price inflation by examining the farmers’ share of retail food prices in relation to consumer inflation. The evidence reveals that farmers have experienced stagnating prices for their products while consumer prices have increased. Ultimately, corporate profiteering is the primary reason for the widening gap between the farmers’ share and the grocery sticker price."

Through the Conclusions and Recommendations outlined in Section 3, the NFU of Canada is "...seeking nothing less than a food system that truly advances individual, community, and national food sovereignty."

Good News for Ontario farmland!
Ontario has just announced upcoming legislation to restrict foreign ownership of farmland. This promises to be a great step forward towards ensuring Ontario land feeds Ontario and reducing pressure on farm prices, which have reached unsupportable levels for farming. Consultation will begin April 22.
