🐾🤎 This beautiful grey face belongs to Gretchen, a senior bulldog who has been sitting in the Fort Erie Spca since April. That means while spring turned into summer, and summer turned into fall, Gretchen has watched the days go by from a shelter. That absolutely breaks our hearts. No senior dog should spend their golden years waiting in a shelter.

So why is Gretchen still waiting? Well, we are told that she has one requirement that makes finding her home a little more challenging: Gretchen is dog selective and needs to be the only dog in her new home. She’s considered a young senior by bulldog standards being 8 years old.

And we know that’s going to rule out many of the wonderful bulldog families who follow our page. But it doesn’t rule out everyone. Somewhere out there is a person or family with an empty dog bed. Someone who doesn’t already have another dog. Someone who has been thinking that maybe it’s time. Someone who might look at this face and fall in love.

We would love nothing more than to help the Fort Erie SPCA get this senior girl out of the shelter and into a home where she can spend her golden years knowing exactly what it feels like to belong.

Let’s make sure she doesn’t spend another season there. 🤎🐾

Our wonderful friend and supporter Dorothy of Hooves and Paws Photography has been busy creating these beautiful handcrafted gemstone bracelets to help raise funds for English Bulldog Rescue of Ontario.

PIPPA UPDATE 💕🐾

Little Pippa was back at the vet for a follow-up and some further testing on her eye. She was completely unimpressed until the snakkies were offered.

Good news first. She’s slowly losing weight and feeling good. Her bloodwork results showed that she’s healthy.

Unfortunately, she has a mild UTI which we are treating. We also learned that what initially appeared to be a fairly straightforward cherry eye is a little more complicated. A more in-depth eye exam showed that Pippa has a scrolled cartilage in her third eyelid, which means this isn’t something that can be corrected with a routine cherry-eye surgery. She will need to see a veterinary ophthalmologist for specialized surgery, and we are looking at having her treated by Dr. Richard Klys, who specializes in these more complicated eye conditions. As you can probably imagine, specialty surgery comes with a pretty significant price tag (big sigh)

Over the next little while, we’ll be putting together a few fundraisers specifically to help with the cost of Pippa’s surgery. We’ll share more details once we have her ophthalmology consultation and a better idea of exactly what she needs.

Have you considered charitable giving through your Last Will and Testament?

For English Bulldog Rescue of Ontario, legacy gifts help ensure that we can continue providing veterinary care, rehabilitation, safety and second chances to bulldogs in need for many years to come. A charitable bequest is a gift made through your Will to a charity. It can be a specific dollar amount, a percentage or share of your estate, or another gift you choose to leave after providing for the people you love.

A charitable bequest may also provide a tax benefit to your estate through available charitable tax credits, potentially reducing the taxes payable by your estate.

If you are making or updating your estate plans, we encourage you to speak with your lawyer about including a charitable bequest to English Bulldog Rescue of Ontario or any other animal charity of your choice. If it would be helpful, please reach out to us by email and we would be happy to provide sample bequest wording for you to discuss with your lawyer.

We have no paid staff. Our rescue is run entirely by volunteers, which means 100% of legacy gifts go directly toward the animals in our care and the work of our rescue. Our registered charity number is 771135936 RR0001

FOSTER-TO-ADOPT HOME NEEDED FOR LOUIE 🐾

We are considering bringing this handsome boy into care and would like to find the right foster-to-adopt home for him before we proceed.

Meet Louie. ❤️

Louie is a 4½-year-old Olde English Bulldog. He is a bigger, strong, active bulldog with lots of energy, so please don’t let that adorable face fool you! According to his current family, Louie gets along well with other dogs, but if there is another dog in the home, we would prefer one who is comfortable with his size and can keep up with his energy.

Louie is being surrendered because he suffers from allergies and ongoing skin problems, and his family is unfortunately no longer able to manage the cost of his veterinary care. We want to give him the opportunity to get properly diagnosed, treated and comfortable again.

This will initially be a fairly hands-on foster placement. We are looking for someone who:

✅Lives close enough to Oshawa (or is willing to drive) to bring Louie to our veterinary clinic for frequent appointments, particularly in the beginning.

✅Is willing and able to give him medicated baths several times a week at home while we work on getting his skin healthy.

✅Understands that treating chronic allergies and skin disease can take time, consistency and patience.

✅Is comfortable handling a large, strong and energetic bulldog. Previous bulldog/bully-breed experience would be strongly preferred.

✅Ideally wants Louie to become a permanent member of their family. Our preference is a foster-to-adopt home, meaning EBRO will oversee his veterinary care and work on getting his skin issues under control, with the intention that his foster family will ultimately adopt him. ❤️

Louie is described as a good boy who just needs someone prepared to put in a little extra work at the beginning to get him feeling his best.

We don’t want people volunteering simply because they feel sorry for him. We need someone who looks at Louie and can genuinely picture him as part of their family for the rest of his life.

🐝 🐝 PSA: SPICY SKY RAISIN SEASON IS HERE!

Those little spicy sky raisins are VERY active right now, especially on warm, sunny fall days, and unfortunately, some bulldogs seem convinced they are delicious flying snacks🐝

As funny as it sounds, a bee or wasp sting can become a serious emergency, particularly if your dog catches or swallows one and is stung inside the mouth or throat. Swelling in that area can quickly affect the airway, something we obviously take especially seriously with our already airway-challenged bulldogs.

We recommend every bulldog household speak with their veterinarian about keeping plain Benadryl (diphenhydramine) on hand and knowing the correct dose for their individual dog BEFORE an emergency happens. If you suspect your dog has been stung and they develop facial or mouth swelling, difficulty breathing, weakness, collapse, vomiting, or other concerning symptoms, head to an emergency veterinarian immediately.

Benadryl is not a substitute for veterinary treatment, particularly when the mouth, throat or airway may be involved, but having an antihistamine available and knowing how your veterinarian wants you to use it could be very important while you are getting your dog to emergency care.

⚠️ Please do not guess at medications or dosages during an emergency. Ask your vet in advance what product and dose are appropriate for your dog, and avoid combination products containing other active ingredients. So enjoy these beautiful sunny fall days… but keep an eye on your little bee hunters. 👀🐝

🚨 EMERGENCY SURGERY FOR SHELBY 🚨
Over the past week, Shelby developed a serious corneal ulcer caused by eyelashes rubbing against the surface of her eye. She cannot open her eye at this point. We were incredibly fortunate to get her in today with Dr. Richard Klys, a veterinary eye specialist in Toronto.

As suspected, Shelby has been diagnosed with ectopic cilia. This is a painful condition where one or more very sharp, course eyelashes grow from the inside of the eyelid instead of along the normal eyelid margin. Every time Shelby blinks, these tiny sharp lashes rub directly against her cornea. In her case, they have already caused a significant ulcer.

Unfortunately, this surgery isn’t something we can wait on. Not only is Shelby is significant discomfort but she risks losing her eye with any further delay. She is scheduled for surgery tomorrow to remove the abnormal lashes and treat her damaged cornea. Her estimated costs, including today’s emergency ophthalmology visit and tomorrow’s surgery, are approximately $4,000.00 with taxes. We wish we had more time to fundraise, but Shelby simply doesn’t have that luxury.

When one of our dogs needs urgent medical care, we say yes and figure out the finances afterward. We are hoping our EBRO family can help us raise the $4,000 Shelby needs. ❤️

Every donation adds up and helps us get this little girl the surgery she needs tomorrow.
