ALUS Peterborough

ALUS Peterborough The Alternative Land Use Services (ALUS) program was first established in the Peterborough region in 2017.

The ALUS Peterborough team works with farmers to identify stewardship opportunities on their land, and support them through the ALUS project approval and implementation process. ALUS Peterborough is looking for agricultural producers whose farms will benefit from the establishment of native prairie, pollinator habitat, shelterbelts, reforestation, enhanced and expanded riparian areas, watering sys

tems, nesting structures and/or fencing around water bodies, as well as from wetland restoration, creation and enhancement. Our priority is taking marginal, unproductive, inefficient, or environmentally sensitive lands out of agricultural production and putting them into the production of environmental goods and services. It is not the goal of this program to remove good farmland from production. The program supports farmers through funding towards establishment materials or contractors, as well as annual payments. Annual payments recognize the farmer's maintenance of the newly re-naturalized sections, as well as the ecological services they are now providing. Ecological services produced may include water filtration, air purification, carbon storage, biodiversity enhancements, habitat for species at risk, soil restoration, and more. The program is farmer delivered, and every project is reviewed by the ALUS Peterborough Partnership Advisory Committee (PAC). The PAC is made up of local farmers and agency members, in order to best reflect the local agricultural and environmental needs and priorities.

Our Story

The ALUS Peterborough program works with farmers to identify stewardship opportunities on their land, and support them through the ALUS project approval and implementation process. ALUS Peterborough is looking for agricultural producers whose farms will benefit from the establishment of native prairie, pollinator habitat, multi-row shelterbelts, reforestation, enhanced and expanded riparian areas, watering systems, nesting structures and/or fencing around water bodies, as well as from wetland restoration, creation and enhancement. Our priority is taking marginal, unproductive, inefficient, or environmentally sensitive lands out of agricultural production and putting them into the production of environmental goods and services.
