Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) is a dynamic land conservation charity with an impressive track record of growth. Our mission is to care for the lands entrusted to us and help others protect the land they love in the Kawarthas. We create nature reserves for future generations by acquiring ecologically important properties and/or interests in properties. We also enhance our stewardship of the land by eng

aging landowners in land care initiatives through our Partners in Conservation program. Founded in 2001, KLT protects 28 properties that include more than 4,800 acres of ecologically diverse lands, some of which include hiking trails that introduce thousands of people to nature in the Kawarthas every year. We have achieved our successes through the work of our dedicated and growing team of donors, volunteers and supporters. KLT works within the Treaty 20 Michi Saagiig Territory and we are dedicated to continuing to create meaningful connections and relationships with First Nations communities in our region as we build upon these connections.

June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day. A day to celebrate the achievements and ongoing contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis people. But it’s also a day to honour their experiences and long history on these lands.

Kawartha Land Trust deeply respects the relationships Indigenous peoples have with the land, and we are committed to listening, learning, and building deep connections with Williams Treaty First Nations and align our conservation efforts with theirs.

Dear Forest,
I am so grateful to you for giving me peace & solitude in listening to the wind rustling your leaves, to the call of the barred owl in the evenings and the constant yipping of the coyotes throughout the night. It makes me realize how truly blessed we are to live in such a beautiful part of Ontario

In late May, we held our second annual Volunteer Lead Property Steward gathering. Kawartha Land Trust’s volunteer Lead Property Stewards are highly dedicated volunteers who help us manage, monitor, and care for the properties you helped protect across the Kawarthas.

This gathering is an opportunity to come together and discuss plans and strategies for the seasons ahead.

"Our Lead Property Stewards are busy working at dozens of properties across the Kawarthas, so it is a rare occasion to get to see them in one place,” shared Ashley Cramer, Land Stewardship Coordinator.

“We truly could not do all of the stewardship work we do and maintain so many community trails without them. KLT is extremely grateful to have support from such a wonderful group. Thank you!"

What do you use binoculars for? At Kawartha Land Trust, Sammy Tangir, our Regional Seed Supply Coordinator, uses her binoculars to spot seeds in trees!

“Spying on seeds through binoculars is an important part of ‘seed-forecasting,’" shares Sammy.

“While forecasting, we’re looking at seeds before they mature to get a sense of their presence and the quality of seeds developing. This helps in planning for future seed collections and dispersal.”

Not every tree makes seed every year and these days, Sammy’s been looking for White Pine conelets and young Red Oak acorns — both are species that take three seasons for their seeds to fully develop.

Thanks to your support, Sammy and KLT's volunteer seed team can ensure the collection and dispersal of seeds from native plant and tree species to support restoration work on our protected lands. 💚

So, this is your sign to go out and test your binoculars to spot seeds in trees!

Last month, Kawartha Land Trust had the pleasure and privilege of announcing the permanent protection of Pierce-Vigneux Nature Sanctuary.

Land donors Paul Vigneux and Penelope Pierce shared, “We think that we can do a little to ensure that there’s room for native flora and fauna in their natural habitat. Knowing that some green space will remain after we’re gone is reassuring to us.”

Located in Selwyn Township, the 96-acre Pierce-Vigneux Nature Sanctuary is a wildlife haven Some of the species seen on the property include, Black Bear, Fisher, Moose, Sandhill Crane, Black-billed Cuckoo, and Northern Harrier, among many others.

Thank you, Paul and Penelope, for protecting the land you love!

It’s ! In late May, we planted 1,200 Black Walnut, Red Maple, Silver Maple, White Birch, White Pine, Red Oak, Tamarack, Swamp White Oak, and Eastern White Cedar trees at the Kidd Farm CEA in Douro, a KLT Partners in Conservation member.

Over the next 50 years, these trees will transform this historically wet area from the marginal perimeter of a formerly cultivated field into a connected, forested wildlife corridor.

These types of corridors are essential because they provide shade, shelter, and food to wildlife that prefer forest edges and rely on wooded corridors to facilitate travel between larger forests.

The trees for this project were generously supplied by ALUS hosted regionally by Kawartha Conservation and planted by Kawartha Land Trust staff and volunteers and Kawartha Conservation staff. Thanks to all involved! 🌳
