Consider these tips if your volunteer work takes you outside!

Are you for the cold weather? 🥶

Here are some reminders for us all heading into the cold Canadian winter!
🥶 Listen for a wind chill warning. Warnings are based on local climate and are issued when significant wind chills are expected.
🥶 Wear warm and waterproof footwear. When it is very cold, or when the wind chill is significant, cover as much exposed skin as possible. Your body's extremities, such as the ears, nose, fingers and toes lose heat the fastest.
🥶 Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
🥶 Some people are more susceptible to the cold, particularly children, the elderly and those with circulation problems.
🥶 Check on elderly relatives and neighbours to ensure they are warm enough and have sufficient supplies, particularly when the weather is cold or snowy. They might not feel comfortable going outside to shop and may require food, medications and other supplies.
🥶 The use of alcohol, to***co and certain medications will increase your susceptibility to cold.
🥶 Make sure your home is well-insulated, the heating system is working efficiently and seal off cracks and drafts.

Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of hyperthermia. If not for yourself, then for someone else you may be assisting this winter 👉 https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hypothermia/symptoms-causes/syc-20352682

Today, we would like to wish you good health in the coming year.

This isn't us nagging you about exercise or diet or trying to sell snake-oil cures. That's not us. But we will direct you to those who can help you maintain your health. A big and obvious one is Peterborough Regional Health Centre, who don't just offer emergency care, but also medical screening and a variety of clinics to help you with anything that may be acting up. Over 50? Welcome to annual screening. Don't skip it.

We also love our friends at Community Care Peterborough for making sure that seniors and disabled people can eat healthy meals in their own homes through Meals on Wheels, and get to vital appointments. Visits, in person or on the phone can ensure that people are hale and hearty in their home.

If your decision to take care of yourself in the new year means life-saving changes in regards to addiction, there are supports and programs out there to help you. It's not easy. Not at all, but there are people who will be with you every step of the way. Right To Heal and some of our counselling groups can help you address the root causes of addiction and deal with them to help you get clean, and, we sincerely hope, stay clean.

We have many, many nonprofits who are dedicated to health and medical issues or research. All of them have a common goal: to keep Canadians, Ontarians, and the fine people of Peterborough County in the best health manageable. We support this.

A health to you in 2025!

As we come into the Holidays, we want you to have joy.

We would like everyone to feel happy and safe this season, but for a lot of reasons, not everyone can, or does. Loneliness, bereavement, depression, domestic upheaval, or want of basic things we need to survive are not going away no matter how loud you crank that Christmas music, how many strings of lights you put up, or how many cookies you bake.

Be the candle in the darkness for someone having an unhappy holiday. Volunteering does not necessarily have to happen through an agency. It can be an invitation between neighbours, or an act of kindness in a store. It can be a smile or a (consensual) hug. A phone call.

And if you are the one having the hard time holding it together, consider giving our friends at Telecare Peterborough a call, or if it’s loss-related, our Hospice Peterborough pals. Calling #211 can set you up with contacts for resources.

We can get through the tough times together. Even the holidays.

Hey! We're taking a moment between baking cookies, wrapping presents, putting up a new string of lights, signing Christmas Cards, and dropping off our charitable donations in person to remind you of something important.

When you support local, local supports you.

Supporting local businesses means supporting your neighbours. It also allows the businesses to offer donations to local nonprofits, or make in-kind arrangements. They can give you an item for your raffle or fundraising auction. They can sponsor a family in need, or ensure that a child in crisis has the thrill of receiving something special.

It's the season of giving, but spending local helps give more.

If you'll excuse us, those cookies smell done, even if the timer hasn't gone off.

Volunteering! Yay!
