We had our cake. Now we’d like our consultation too.

Today, our locals celebrated a new agreement securing a seat at the table with management. A milestone worth marking and absolutely worth cake.

Then we returned to our desks to another surprise announcement from the colleges: program sharing across Fleming and St. Lawrence.

The icing had barely set. 🙃

Thankfully, this week also included an opportunity to sit down with Ontario NDP MPPs to discuss the crisis in Ontario’s post-secondary system and what it means for workers, students and our communities.

We’re proud of the work that has brought us to this point. And look forward to putting our seats to use at the table for the meaningful consultation that is needed ahead.

We’ll bring the voices of our members and apparently, we can also bring dessert. 🍰

One might actually wonder why anyone would enter into a contract with this company based on the amount of concerns across their operations.

$19.30 an hour is not a living wage in Peterborough, but if you work with our Dexterra colleagues at Fleming College’s Sutherland campus that’s your pay.

The Ontario Living Wage Network calculated the 2025 living wage for our region at $22.20/hour.

Like many others in our community they are falling further behind - They each start each shift knowing that they are $2.90 behind a living wage every hour - that’s a gap of $6,000 a year for full time worker!

This week OPSEU Local 351 Dexterra workers voted 100% to strike - not because they want to strike, but because they NEED better.

When you’re already earning below a living wage, one missed day of work, a sick family member or a system mistake on your paycheque can make the difference between paying rent, buying groceries or covering the bills.

These are the workers who keep our spaces clean and safe and every single day. Their work has value — and their wages should reflect it.

Their employer benefits from their labour. Dexterra builds profits while the people doing the work are struggling to afford the basic cost of living.

Dexterra can afford to do better. These workers deserve better.

It’s time to close the gap.

100% YES!

Last night, the Sutherand Campus Dexterra Staff Unit of OPSEU/SEFPO Local 351 delivered a powerful message of solidarity:

100% of members who voted supported taking strike action.

That kind of unity matters.

A strong strike mandate does not mean workers want a strike. It means they are standing together and making it clear they are prepared to fight for a fair collective agreement and the respect they deserve at work.

We are incredibly proud of our Dexterra members for standing shoulder to shoulder!!!!

We are so excited to announce that Carolyn Leeson, Career Educator at the Sutherland Campus, and a current steward with local 351, has been recognized by the Career Professionals of Canada as one of this year's Outstanding Career Professionals! OPSEU Local 351 joins our colleagues from OPSEU Local 352 Fleming Faculty in expressing our deepest condolences to Julia’s family, friends and colleagues at this time. 😢

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Julia Scarlett.

Julia was a dedicated faculty member at the Frost Campus. She will be remembered for her infectious laugh, vivacious spirit, and enthusiasm and energy. Her bright personality and spirited presence were a valued part of the campus community.

Julia's years of dedication to her students and colleagues made a lasting impact, and her absence will be deeply felt by those who had the opportunity to know and work alongside her.

We offer our deepest condolences to Julia's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. May the memories of her warmth, laughter, and vibrant spirit bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.

Stewards Carmen Gelette and Nicole Grady spent time today helping pack the backpacks in preparation for Peterborough area students this fall.
