Watersheds Canada

Watersheds Canada Watersheds Canada is a charity dedicated to facilitating community involvement in freshwater action.

Watersheds Canada is a federally incorporated non-profit organization and registered Canadian charity (863555223RR0001). We are committed to providing programs to communities across the country that work to engage and help shoreline owners enhance and protect the health of lakes and rivers. Our vision is for people to be engaged and caring for clean, healthy lakes and rivers that sustain humans an

d wildlife for years to come. We have been working on freshwater issues for over 20 years, and we have learned a lot about what people and local groups need in order to keep their freshwater healthy. Along with supporting and collaborating with other organizations, we develop programs and pilot them in our local area of Eastern Ontario, and then train and support others to deliver these programs in their own local areas across Canada. The work we do would not be possible without the dedication of our local partners.

Have you noticed yellow particles floating on the water recently? It's pollen!

Pollen should not be mistaken for algae. It is yellow-green, dust-like, and floats mainly on the surface of water bodies.

In the spring and early summer, pollen from pines and other trees can fall onto the surface of the water forming a large yellow film. It may collect on the edge of shorelines or float for long periods in open water. It can also become water-logged and sink to the bottom.

While pollen is unpleasant for allergy sufferers, it is otherwise harmless.

Give a Great Blue Heron for a great Dad, Grandpa, or Uncle this Father's Day!

Whether it’s retrieving a top-water bait over a glassy lake or navigating a long canoe trip together, freshwater memories with our father figures often form the foundation of our love of the outdoors and of our relationship with them as a person. Along the way, surprise sightings of wildlife like a Great Blue Heron also help bond relationships.

When you symbolically adopt a Great Blue Heron this Father's Day, you will receive a 5"x7" postcard with artwork from a Canadian artist as well as a beautiful blank honour card for you to personalize and give. All symbolic adoptions are eligible for a Canadian charitable income tax receipt.

On Wednesday, Watersheds Canada CEO Robert Pye and National Conservation Director Chloe Lajoie joined Ottawa Riverkeeper’s sponsors and friends at their 13th annual gala. The event was as vibrant and energetic as the generous supporters who attend the gala every year to support Ottawa Riverkeeper. Watersheds Canada is a proud Ottawa Riverkeeper partner, and their dedication to protecting freshwater continues to inspire us.

Thank you to Ottawa Riverkeeper - Garde-rivière des Outaouais for your leadership, passion, and unwavering dedication to the Ottawa River. Congratulations on an incredible gala!💧

What legacy will you have for Canada's freshwater?

Have you ever had an "awe" moment? The sunset on the river that was too stunning to seem real, the glass-like reflection on the lake as a loon called in the distance, the chasing of fireflies as your children and grandchildren laugh in glee. These moments define us for the rest of our lives, shaping our relationship with nature. You can make sure those memories are possible for generations to come with a legacy gift.

Watersheds Canada is a member of Will Power: Change the World with your Will, a national campaign that educates Canadians about the power of leaving a charitable gift in their will. Even 1% of your estate can have an incredible impact. See for yourself using the Will Power campaigns legacy calculator.

Last month, our executive director, Robert Pye, attended Shared Waters: A Knowledge Exchange Workshop and Celebration of Freshwater Places, hosted by Oceans North, Ottawa Riverkeeper - Garde-rivière des Outaouais, and Northern Confluence, and facilitated by Our Living Waters.

The gathering created space for participants to share stories, insights, and ideas on how to protect freshwater ecosystems.

We’re grateful to have been part of these important conversations and inspired by the people working every day to protect the waters that sustain us all. 💧

Female loons usually lay two eggs in May or June, and both parents incubate them for about four weeks until they hatch. Loons cannot walk well on land, so they build their nests very close to the water’s edge.

While boating, avoid creating a wake in areas where loons are likely to be nesting. If wakes are repeatedly swamping or destroying nests, loons may abandon the nesting site.

🌊 Steer clear of known nesting areas. If you see a loon nest, give it plenty of space - keep a distance of 50 metres or more.
🌊 Boat slowly close to the shoreline - 10 km/h or less within 30 metres of the shore.
🌊 Canoes, kayaks, and other non-motorized boats can also cause stress to nesting loons.
🌊 Loons that are vocalizing or in a head-down, flattened position over the nest are likely feeling threatened and should be given more space.

Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢

Help protect freshwater turtles:
➡️ Slow down while driving. Watch for turtles crossing the road, especially in areas close to wetlands.
➡️ Leave fallen logs and woody debris along shorelines. Turtles need these habitat features to bask in the sun because, as reptiles, they receive energy from the sun’s warm temperatures.
➡️ Build a turtle nest protector.
➡️ Participate in a community science project.
