Playing & Coaching Background

Over the past 10 years, I have coached teams ranging from U9 to U15 in various female hockey programs. For the past two seasons, I have been the Head Coach of the PMHA U13 Female Rec team and was honoured to receive PMHA's Recreation Coach of the Year award in both seasons.

Outside of coaching, I play in and operate the South Okanagan Women's Hockey League (SOWHL). I am passionate about creating opportunities for female players to continue playing hockey as adults and fostering a community long after they graduate from minor hockey.

Coaching Philosophy

My coaching philosophy is centered on player development, player empowerment, and fostering a positive team culture. I believe players learn best when they feel supported, challenged, and valued. While skill development and competition are very important, I place equal emphasis on effort, teamwork, and confidence-building.

My goal is to help athletes become better hockey players, teammates, and leaders both on and off the ice.

Advice for Players Before Tryouts

Tryouts are an opportunity to showcase not only your skills but also your attitude, work ethic, and character. A positive attitude, high effort, and coachability can leave a lasting impression.

What I Enjoy Most About Coaching

What I enjoy most about coaching is watching a group of individual players come together as a team. Seeing players trust one another, learn together, support each other, and buy into a shared goal is incredibly rewarding and often leads to the most meaningful success both on and off the ice.

I am a proud alumnus of Penticton Minor Hockey Association (PMHA) and Okanagan Hockey Academy (OHA). I previously served as an Assistant Coach with the U18 T3 Team and was the Head Coach of the U15 Female A team last season.

As a coach, I believe in a player-centric approach, placing individual
development, leadership, confidence, and accountability at the forefront of the team experience. I combine this philosophy with a strong emphasis on the tactical side of the game, teaching players to understand systems, make intelligent decisions, and develop hockey IQ.

My goal is to help athletes reach their potential by creating a challenging, supportive and enjoyable environment where players can learn and compete, while building lifelong skills that transcend beyond the game of hockey.

I thank the Penticton Minor Hockey Association for the opportunity to challenge myself and the players of the U18 Tier 2 Hockey Program.

I played my Minor Hockey in Edmonton, Alberta, playing to Junior level, and always strived to better myself and my teammates, I have coached Bantam and Midget “AA” and “AAA” teams, then moved to British Columbia and have coached U18’s in Osoyoos for 3 years twice going to the Provincials, winning the Provincials in 2021/22, the last two years coaching Junior A Hockey in Edson, Alberta NJHL and last season coaching Junior A Hockey Lake Cowichan, British Columbia VIJHL, I look forward to pursuing excellence with the new challenge’s ahead.

Coaching Philosophy:

Our U18 Tier 2 hockey program is committed to developing well-rounded athletes, strong teammates, and responsible young adults. We believe that success is measured not only by wins and losses, but by the growth of each player in skill, character, and commitment.

I strive to provide a competitive environment that emphasizes hard work, accountability, discipline, and respect. Players are encouraged to pursue excellence through consistent effort, a team-first mindset, and a willingness to learn from both success and adversity.

My coaching philosophy focuses on skill development, hockey IQ, physical preparation, and mental resilience. I aim to prepare athletes for the next level of hockey while fostering a lifelong passion for the game.

Every player is expected to contribute positively to the team culture by demonstrating sportsmanship, integrity, and respect for teammates, coaches, officials, opponents, and the game itself.

Through a balance of competition, development, and enjoyment, we seek to create an environment where players can maximize their potential both on and off the ice.

Players Evaluations:

Players should bring there best to the tryout portion of the process in making this team, it is where coaches will identify who has done the work over the last couple of months, stamina, speed, agility, and hockey IQ, will go a long way in making our chose easier and have a smoother transition.

Coaching is a place of commitment while having fun:

Coaching has been a way for me to give back to players, I have had multiple mentors I my life and now wish to pass on to the new up and coming players of today, in a way the young men and women keep me young, and has been a pleasure to coach for over 40 years.

Thank you,

Don Chase
