Once again it was Dress Alike Day at Rotary! But only these two Rotarians and good friends seemed to get the memo! The Dress Alike Day also happened back in June - Black and White Day with three friends also wearing coordinating outfits.

Seriously though, we only "Dress Alike" when we are wearing Rotary clothing and doing projects or community service! But making friends and having fun is a big part of Rotary. Check us out to learn more!

At Rotary this week we were pleased to welcome Cathy Goheen from the Rotary Club of Kelowna Ogopogo. Cathy, the founder of Dr. Specs Optical and a former teacher spoke on their project in Honduras, which she and her club have supported for over 30 years.

Prior to the project, children roamed the market and streets while mothers sold goods. The children did not attend school due to their single mom's inability to afford uniforms and books for their large families.

The project provides support for students to attend school through providing funds for textbooks and uniforms. For youth, antibullying and gender equality programs are provided. For adults, domestic violence prevention, nutrition, and family planning, are offered.

Students have attended university and colleges to become teachers, nurses, engineers and business owners. Mothers have become empowered to improve their lives. A true example of Rotary supporting sustainable programs in developing countries.

Thank you for sharing your project Cathy! Pres. Tom presented Cathy with a certificate indicating 20 children were vaccinated against Polio in her name.

At Rotary this week, our guest speaker was Penticton Sunrise Honorary Member Barry Reid from Kelowna Sunrise Rotary. Barry updated us on our four projects in Bangladesh which spanned 15 years from 2011-2026.

The first project provided wells for clean water, sanitation, employment opportunities for women (sewing machines, livestock) and men (carpentry, electrical), sports equipment, and an area for a school, for villages classified as very poor in Bangladesh.

The second and third projects occurred in two larger villages and involved water wells and sanitation (latrines), health education, and economic opportunities (sewing machines) for the villagers.

The final project in Dhaka started during Covid, to provide an ICU with a ventilation system including piped oxygen, cardiac monitors and staff education in a public hospital. The hospital project took longer due to Covid and other local issues and was completed in 2026.

The club partnered with the Dhaka Rotary Club of Sonargaon Dhaka, District 3281 for these projects. Funding for the four projects was secured with donations from Penticton Sunrise, the club in Dhaka, Rotary Club of Summerland, Kelowna Rotary, Sunnyside Rotary in WA, the Canadian government, Rotary5060 and Rotary International.

Former Penticton Sunrise Rotarians Tarik and Tahira Saheed, through personal connections with the Rotary Club of Sonargaon Dhaka, District 3281 were able to visit the initial project in Bangladesh.

The total amount donated was $181,000 over the 15 years!
