The Burrowing Owl community has lost a true champion in David Johnson 'DJ'. We have been honoured to work alongside David since 2010 when he invited us to a Burrow Master session at Umatilla in Oregon. Over the years we would go down to visit him and the owls often. We learned from each other on how to protect the Burrowing Owl.
He was a brilliant mentor and a dear friend who championed our work every step of the way. He held a special place in the hearts of Lia and Lauren, both of whom deeply valued their friendship with him. David was a constant source of encouragement for our program, always reminding us to persevere, no matter the obstacles. His legacy will undoubtedly live on through the work we continue to do.

Thank you to the African Lion Safari and their Research and Conservation team for partnering with our program to look at our long-term conservation breeding data!!

The article, β€œNo evidence of skewed or extra variable s*x ratio in a Western burrowing owl (𝘈𝘡𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘦 𝘀𝘢𝘯π˜ͺ𝘀𝘢𝘭𝘒𝘳π˜ͺ𝘒 𝘩𝘺𝘱𝘢𝘨𝘒𝘦𝘒) conservation breeding program,” has been published in the Canadian Journal of Zoology in collaboration with BC Wildlife Park and the Burrowing Owl Conservation Society of BC.

Western burrowing owls are an endangered species in Canada, and conservation breeding and reintroduction efforts are an important part of supporting their recovery. Using 30 years of data from British Columbia’s long-term breeding program, the team investigated whether breeding pairs were producing disproportionately male or female offspring.

The results provided encouraging news! While annual variation exists, the program consistently produced nearly equal numbers of male and female offspring over time. Maintaining balanced s*x ratios is important for avoiding demographic biases and supporting healthy, sustainable populations in the wild.

This publication highlights the value of long-term research and collaborative conservation efforts in helping inform species recovery strategies. Congratulations to our Research and Conservation team and all project partners on this important contribution!

Sound up! You can hear Pluto giving a couple of soft calls. Burrowing owls can vocalize up to 14 different calls. This is a friendly call!
