From birds and bugs to tides and trees, come see how much you know about Pender’s wildlife and natural history. Play on your own or as a team to test your knowledge, win prizes, and maybe even learn something new about Pender’s ecosystems.

Sweater season has arrived at the Nature Centre 🍂🌲

Our new made in Canada hoodies feature one of Pender’s most familiar forest giants: the Douglas-fir. The design captures a quiet moment beneath the trees, with a towering fir and a human figure standing below in reverence.

Designed and printed right here on Pender Island by the talented Stef Williams of OMDL Coastal, the hoodies celebrate the forests around us while helping support the Conservancy’s work to protect them.

We also have a collection of new sticker designs in the shop, along with plenty of locally and Canadian-made finds.

A double-header for bird lovers!

Mark your calendars for two special evenings at the Community Hall!

🎬 October 16 | Sandpipers’ Last Supper 🎬

How does a bird no heavier than a few coins fly thousands of kilometres? It eats mud, of course!

Join us for a screening of Sandpipers’ Last Supper, a 25-minute documentary by Vancouver-based filmmaker Isabelle Groc exploring the extraordinary migration of Western Sandpipers and the biofilm-rich mudflats they depend on to refuel.

After the screening, stay for a panel conversation with estuary ecologist Dr. Pat Baird and Raincoast biologist Misty MacDuffee.

📖 October 19 | An Evening with Jackie Morris & The Book of Birds🐦

Award-winning author and artist Jackie Morris is visiting Pender to share her new book, The Book of Birds, an illustrated exploration of 49 threatened bird species through seven wonders: nest, egg, beak, song, feather, flight, and migration.

The evening will bring together art, science, music, poetry, and conversation, including a special discussion with Jackie, Conservancy avian biologist Erin O’Brien, and environmental lawyer and author David Boyd.

Put on your gardening gloves and come help us w**d, plant, and mulch the riparian restoration area at Shingle Bay Park.

We’re delighted to welcome Diana to the Conservancy team!

Dr. Diana Bertuol Garcia joins the Conservancy as a Mitacs Accelerate postdoctoral researcher. With a scientific background in ecology and a passion for ecological restoration, she’ll be leading the charge on restoration and research projects. During her time on Pender, Diana will be focusing on complex environmental and conservation challenges; one of these will be investigating methods for restoring ecosystems on Conservancy Nature Reserves and beyond, with the goal of enhancing biodiversity and ecological resilience.

When Diana’s not on the job, she loves to backpack and get acquainted with local flora and fauna. You’ll always find her with binoculars and a field notebook in hand. Please give her a warm welcome to Pender Island; we’re so fortunate to have her expertise and enthusiasm at the Conservancy.

Did you know we have native trees at Pender Native Plants?

This week’s plant highlight is Western redcedar (Thuja plicata).

Often called the “Tree of Life,” Western redcedar has long been valued for the many ways it supports both people and the ecosystems around it. These remarkable trees are also incredibly long-lived, with some in British Columbia reaching more than 1,000 years old!

Western redcedar could be a wonderful addition to your property if you’re looking to:

🌱 Gain privacy or help restore a previously cleared area
🌲 Add a native tree that offers nesting sites and shelter for birds, small mammals, and beneficial insects
💚 Plant something that can be appreciated for generations to come

This Friday, we’re grateful to join PEPAKEṈ HÁUTW̱ for a community volunteer day at QENENIW̱, working under an agreement with Tsawout First Nation.

Community members are invited to take part in ongoing ecosystem restoration work by helping remove invasive species at the site.

Hosted by the Garden Club, Nik Hill of Pender Native Plants will welcome visitors to the nursery for a tour of the demonstration forest and wetland areas currently under development.

Learn about native trees, shrubs, and perennials for sun and shade, with a special focus on fire-resistant vegetation suited to our area.

There will also be an opportunity to get hands-on with tree planting! 🌱 Bring garden gloves if you’d like to participate.

Join us for a screening of Sandpipers’ Last Supper at the Community Hall.

How does a bird no heavier than a few coins fly thousands of kilometres? It eats mud, of course!

Western Sandpipers refuel on biofilm, an invisible layer of nutrients coating intertidal flats, and Sandpipers’ Last Supper shows how they do it.

This 25-minute documentary by Vancouver-based filmmaker Isabelle Groc follows that journey up close. It’s a story with real stakes: shorebirds are among the fastest-declining bird groups in the world, and the mudflats they rely on are easy to overlook and easy to lose.

After the screening, stay for a panel conversation with estuary ecologist Dr. Pat Baird.
