He was often a member of our pick-up orchestras, too.

The DRSO is mourning the loss of one of its longest playing members, Kit Coleman, who passed away March 23.

Kit played a few concerts on clarinet in the late 1960s after arriving with his family in Deep River. But in those days the orchestra often had difficulty finding people to play all the instruments. As the story goes, Kit asked “What do you need”? The answer was - double bass. So he took it upon himself to learn the instrument and by 1972 was a member of the orchestra on double bass. That was the start of what ended up being an astounding 48-year stint with the DRSO that, as one former co-worker recalled, meant Kit always had his bass with him when buying a new car so he could be sure it would fit inside. Kit retired in 2020 but the story of how he came to play double bass has long been part of the DRSO lore and is told to this day.

Kit supported the DRSO in many non-playing ways as well. He served a period as DRSO president, held a fundraising event at his riverfront home, and when he retired he immediately joined Judy as part of our concert Front of House team greeting audience members and handing out programs.

Kit’s commitment to, and on-going support for, the DRSO truly made him the epitome of what is needed for a community orchestra to thrive and we are grateful for his long association with the DRSO.
