The Rotary Club of Pemberton would like to pay tribute to one of our members, Richard Megeney, who passed away in August. Richard had been a member of Rotary since 2009, and his most current position with the club was treasurer. Richard was a true Rotarian, embracing Service Above Self, volunteering his time in various facets of the Pemberton community. He will be missed by all of us.
Obiturary of Richard Harold Megeney
April 11, 1942 – August 08, 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Richard Harold Megeney on August 8, 2026, at the age of 84. Richard was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, on April 11, 1942, the second of seven children of Arthur and Yvonne Megeney. As a young man, he left his birthplace to seek his fortune in Montreal, where he found his calling in the emerging computer industry. Richard was a pioneer in the industry's early days and eventually joined Berthiaume, St. Pierre and Theriault, an up-and-coming, dynamic company known as Le Groupe BST. In 1970, Aquila-BST was sold to American financial interests. In April 1979, Paul Berthiaume, President, and Richard Megeney, Vice President and General Manager, successfully bought Aquila-BST back from its American owners, returning ownership and corporate control to Canadian hands. This remarkable buyback remains a classic piece of Quebec IT corporate folklore. Richard retired at the age of 61 and moved to Pemberton/Whistler, British Columbia, where he embraced a new chapter of life as a grandfather, Rotarian, and community volunteer. He was also a founder of The Men Shed, an organization dedicated to supporting the mental health and well-being of seniors. Richard enjoyed his life to the fullest. He followed his passions for skiing and golf, travelled extensively around the world, and enjoyed music, theatre, outdoor pursuits, bridge, and fine cuisine. Richard will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humour, infectious laughter, generosity, and devotion to his family and friends. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the local doctors and palliative care nurses whose compassionate assistance made it possible for Richard to spend his final days at home, surrounded by those who loved him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pemberton District Health Care Foundation in Richard’s memory. Please dedicate your gift to Richard Megeney.
