If you see a smooth greensnake, please report it! 🐍
Last year, with your help, we made important progress in understanding PEI’s RAREST reptile species — the Smooth Greensnake 🐍 Public observations were one of the best ways we gathered data, and we confirmed that Smooth Greensnakes are still here on PEI — but MANY questions remain about where they live, habitat use, and population status. 🤔
📊 2025 at a glance:
• We received 20 reliable Smooth Greensnake observations from the public
• Observations came from all three counties
• New observations were shared with our friends at the Atlantic Canada Conservation Data Centre where they can be used in the future to assess the conservation status of this species for PEI
These contributions are CRITICAL— this species is rare, difficult to detect, and still poorly understood in PEI.
📣 We need your help again in 2026!
If you see a Smooth Greensnake, PLEASE REPORT IT! When submitting an observation, include:
1. Location (GPS coordinates or a detailed description of where you saw the snake)
2. A photo or video if possible
3. A description of the habitat (e.g., long grass, wet meadow, near forest edge, under logs or rocks)
‼️We are also actively looking for any dead Smooth Greensnakes (e.g., roadkill, lawn mower strikes) to support an ongoing genetic study. These samples will help improve our understanding of population structure and conservation need. If you find a dead Smooth Greensnake, place the deceased snake in a plastic bag, store it in your freezer, and contact us to arrange collection.
If you have a sighting to report, please contact Julie-Lynn via email at [email protected] or telephone at 902-368-6450.
Thank you for helping us learn more about this unique and elusive species!
