Lab science, meet field science. 🤝

After two years of collaboration and testing, scientists in our Maritimes Region developed FASTeDNA, a field-deployable, adaptable environmental DNA (eDNA) tool for rapid species detection and real-time aquatic surveillance.

Aquatic organisms leave behind tiny traces of genetic material, like fingerprints, known as eDNA. Traditionally, scientists collect water samples and send them to a lab for analysis to identify species in an ecosystem.

With FASTeDNA, we can collect and analyze those same samples directly in the field — helping us respond more quickly to what we find in our waters.

FASTeDNA is being used by our staff and partners to:
🐠 Detect and respond to aquatic invasive species
🐟 Identify the presence of species, such as species at-risk
🌊 Monitor the marine environment

Watershed Wednesday 💧

Every week we share a quick tip or fact about watersheds and why they matter. Healthy streams, wetlands, and rivers help support wildlife, clean water, and strong communities.

Today’s Topic: 🌧️ Where Does the Rain Go?

Ever wonder where a raindrop goes after it hits the ground? 💧

Some rainwater soaks into the soil, where it can become groundwater. Some is taken up by plants, while the rest flows across the land into ditches, streams, rivers, and eventually our estuaries and ocean.

As water travels, it can also pick up soil, nutrients, road salt, and other pollutants along the way. That means what happens on the land around us can have a direct impact on the health of our waterways. 🌱🌊

Next time it rains, take a moment to watch where the water flows around your yard or neighbourhood. You might be surprised where its journey begins—and where it ends!

As the first week of August passes, it’s time to take a peek into what our crew has been up to the past month! July kept us busy with lots of field work and community events, which, thanks to our crew, all went smoothly. Here’s to hoping that August will be just as fun and successful!
