Today we will get to know one of our newest volunteers, Heather from MADD Summerside!
Why did you choose to get involved with MADD Canada?
Our family moved to PEI in the summer of 2023, with my daughter in college and my son in high school. In the short time we’ve been here, we’ve witnessed an alarming number of young lives lost to impaired driving. What struck me most was how often friends would say things like “see you around” in online tributes, as if their friend had simply stepped away for coffee, not lost their life.
In the fall of 2025, my children said goodbye to several friends and fellow students within a very short time. That was the moment it became impossible to just stand by. I reached out to MADD Canada to ask what more could be done to help prevent these heartbreaking losses on PEI.
That conversation became the starting point for rebuilding a Summerside chapter of MADD Canada, with both myself and my daughter now volunteering, working toward change so fewer families have to experience this kind of loss.
How do you feel being involved with MADD Canada has helped you and others?
Choosing a safe ride has always been second nature in my family. Whether it’s arranging a taxi, calling for a sober driver, or making sure my kids know I’ll always be there to pick them up, no questions asked, it’s just what we do.
Volunteering with MADD Canada has given me the opportunity to extend that mindset beyond my own family. If sharing this message helps even one person make the choice to call for a safe ride instead of driving impaired, then it’s worth it.
What would you tell others who are considering volunteering with MADD Canada?
Do it. Every voice matters. The more people who share the message about the dangers of impaired driving, the greater the chance we have to save lives.
Volunteering with MADD Canada is a way to turn awareness into action, helping prevent tragedies and sparing families from unimaginable loss.
Thank you Heather! We love having you on our team!
