Nothing is Impossible!

One has travelled through space, and one is scheduled for takeoff on October 1. What do they have in common? Along with a shared passion for science and exploration, they were both air cadets, Royal Military College of Canada graduates, and pilots in the CAF before joining the Canadian Space Program!

Colonel Joshua Kutryk (left) will be the next Canadian to fly to the International Space Station as a member of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-13. The mission will last approximately six months. While in space, Colonel Kutryk will conduct scientific experiments and test new technologies.

Congratulations to these two cadets that each received a Challenge Coin from the Sunderland Legion for their participation in last year's Santa Claus Parade.

What is a Challenge Coin?

Canadian military challenge coins are deeply rooted tokens of pride, service, and camaraderie used across the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). While historically viewed as an "Americanism," the practice expanded significantly within the Canadian military under General Rick Hillier in the early 2000s, as Canadian units began interacting more closely with the United States military. However, the tradition dates even further back, notably with the Canadian Airborne Regiment adopting a coin in 1974.
Today, they are used by individual units, commands, and schools for both presentation and recognition purposes.

These rare, limited issue coins are a token of appreciation to our cadets for showing up to this community event alongside the Legion, and signifies a form of honorary membership.

Congratulations!
