Stone bones at Wtuoml!

The Mi'kmaq have been here in Mi'kma'ki for time immemorial and there are countless Mi'kmaw stories that teach us science, history, and all about the land we inhabit. During Mi'kmaw History Month, and beyond, it's important we highlight and tell the stories of the ancestors.

Today, we're sharing a story from Stephen Hood, a Mi'kmaw man that lived in Mill Village (Parrsboro) in the 1800s. In 1869, he shared the story of Kluskap's wow (pot), a story about Wtumol (Spencer's Island). Hood shared that Wtumol is Kluskap's pot, turned over and made of stone. When his pot turned over, the scraps and bones scattered around and turned to stone. Today, this region is known for its beautifully preserved Carboniferous, Triassic, and Jurassic aged fossils - something the Mi'kmaq living in this area knew about and recorded in their stories. The next time you visit us, or one of the other fossil localities in this region, we hope you'll think of Stephen Hood and the story of Kluskap's wow!

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. It is a day to listen, remember, and reflect on the history and lasting impact of residential schools on First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

Truth and Reconciliation Day is not simply about remembering the past. It is also about understanding the truth of what happened and recognizing our shared responsibility to learn from it. Reconciliation requires listening to Indigenous voices, acknowledging the harm that was done, respecting Indigenous cultures and traditions, and taking meaningful steps toward building relationships based on understanding and respect.

We finished our 2026 season on a high note with Aquakultre’s 1783 Live concert. It was an incredible show the took our audience on a musical journey through Black Nova Scotian history. We are so fortunate they came and played for us in Parrsboro having just performed at the Polaris Awards in Toronto. Nova Scotia is so rich in amazing musical artists, and we are grateful that we can present these shows at the Ship.
