Details:
This is a two-day course running from 9 am to 5 pm each day with short breaks throughout. There are both indoor and outdoor elements. There is some travel, usually by car, from the classroom space to local trails and participants are responsible for their own transportation to the course and between the classroom and trails. Participants are responsible for bringing their own meals and snacks and arranging their own accommodation. Participants are expected to read through an online manual before attending the course, provided soon after they register. There is also a written test at the end of course participants must pass in order to receive their OCC certification.

To be hiking leaders, participants should have some hiking experience and be able to participate in a low risk natural environment hike on a designated trail while carrying what they will need for the day outside. Participants must have the physical ability to hike on a footpath with rocks and roots, etc. Those who successfully meet the course outcomes will earn Outdoor Council of Canada Field Leader – Hiking certification along with the necessary skills to be a confident hiking leader. Participants must attend the full two-day course in order to receive certification. For further information regarding Field Leader - Hiking Certification, please go to the Outdoor Council of Canada.

Happy World Oceans Day! Today, as we celebrate the incredible waters of the Minas Basin and the global ocean that connects us all, it is a perfect time to reflect on our shared role in environmental stewardship.

Our shorelines are a vital part of the Geopark’s story, and protecting them requires collective, community-driven action. That is why we are so excited to be moving forward with Debris to Design (D2D)—a unique stewardship project in partnership with Scotian Shores and Parrsboro Creative. Together, we are turning beach litter into meaningful collective designs that honour our coastlines, leading up to a special community showcase on August 1st.

Caring for our waters takes a community, and you can make a direct impact today. If you would like to support our ongoing coastal conservation, environmental education, and community stewardship initiatives, please consider making a donation here: https://auhsssyy.donorsupport.co/page/FUNAZQFKXRT

🏳️‍🌈 🌾 Honouring Identity, Celebrating Diversity 🌾🏳️‍⚧️

Happy June, everyone! Today marks the beginning of both Pride Month and National Indigenous History Month. Here at the Cliffs of Fundy UNESCO Global Geopark, we are incredibly proud to celebrate the beautiful, diverse tapestry of identities that make our region so vibrant.

For us, environmental stewardship and community belonging go hand-in-hand. This month, we reflect deeply on our foundational commitment to Etuaptmumk (Two-Eyed Seeing) and Mi’kma’ki stewardship, honoring the historical and ongoing role of the Mi’kmaq as the original caretakers of these lands and waters. At the very same time, we celebrate our vibrant 2SLGBTQIA+ community, believing that the outdoors should be a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space for everyone.

We are thrilled to share two incredible upcoming events that showcase our active commitment to these values:

🥾 Two Pride Hikes: We have two dedicated Pride hikes scheduled for this month, creating safe, visible, and joyful spaces for the q***r community and allies to connect out on our beautiful trails. June 18 at 6:00 PM in Victoria Park, Truro and June 22 at 6:00 PM at the Parrsboro Bandstand to explore local waterfalls. Email [email protected] for more details and to register.

🎨 PIPAF Keynote Speaker: As part of our proud sponsorship of the Parrsboro International Plein Air Festival, we invite you to join us on Tuesday, June 16, for a special keynote presentation by Elder Dr. Gerald Gloade, exploring the profound cultural and historical significance of the Bay of Fundy. Check out https://pipaf.ca for more details.

Lets take this opportunity to celebrate the incredible people who shape our communities. ❤️
