Theatre has many forms. There are many ways to craft (wright) a play. We do it with and in community.
Sometimes the spark is an urge to help, to make things better. That spark needs the right conditions, the right people coming together, the right place and time for it to grow. And each project we do has a different trajectory and timeline.
For instance, Be Our Ally, our interactive play about homophobia from a rural LGBTQ+ perspective took 20 years to come to fruition. 11 years ago, the first professional tour was in rehearsals to tour to schools in Grey Bruce and beyond.
Why did it take 20 years? Because though many people (especially young people) said we need to do a play about this, they were deeply afraid to be involved. They felt unsafe. Until 2014, when we workshopped the play with community youth, and then further developed it in 2015.
All to say: we are at work on another play, this time looking at Intimate Partner Violence at another part of the age spectrum, IPV in older adults. It's been a journey, but now stories are coming in, people are stepping up. This play is growing, organically. Kind of like Spring this year: 3 steps forward, 1 step back. But we are going forward.
