Canadian troops played an important role in defeating fascism in Italy. Just outside Ravenna a few years ago we stopped at a small family-run restaurant. The elderly gentleman who greeted us welcomed us with open arms as he reminded us of that role.

Today, we celebrate the defeat of the fascists in Italy.

In 2019, I travelled with the Canadian veterans to commemorate the Battle of Italy. Near Ravena, we were asked to pull off on a side road to meet the local people. We were met by aged partisans with their battle flags. They wanted to pay tribute to their Canadian comrades.

Together, they stopped the fascists.
Never again fascist. Never again.

As the largest United Nations convening dedicated to gender equality and women’s rights opens, governments meeting at the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women have adopted Agreed Conclusions aimed at strengthening access to justice and advancing gender equality worldwide.

The conclusions call for the removal of discriminatory laws, expanded access to legal aid, and stronger measures to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls.
