We’re excited to announce the final speaker joining our October 27 legacy giving webinar: Rita Asangarani.

Rita is the Managing Lawyer of Rita Asangarani Law Firm Professional Corporation, a paperless law firm continuing the legal practice of Robin D. MacKay. Her practice includes Real Estate, Wills, Estates, Corporate Law, Canon Law, and Cooperative Housing Law.

Rita holds an Honours Bachelor of Social Science in Criminology and a Juris Doctor from the University of Ottawa, as well as a post-graduate certification in Victimology. She is committed to making legal processes clear and accessible, helping clients plan for the future with confidence.

Rita has presented on a variety of legal topics, including Will drafting, the importance of keeping Wills up to date, and the emerging intersection of artificial intelligence in estate planning including Digital Necromancy. Her firm proudly offers services in English, Farsi, Arabic, and Greek.

How do we care for the people who spend their days caring for others?

An AFC bursary is helping support the Rev. Canon Hilary Murray’s Doctor of Ministry studies at Virginia Theological Seminary, where her research explores how spirituality, faith, hope, race, generational trauma, workplace stress, and health intersect in the lives of frontline community workers.

Hilary is also a clinical chaplain at Cornerstone Housing for Women in Ottawa, where she provides spiritual care and pastoral support to residents and staff.
Her goal is practical: to develop spiritually grounded supports that can help frontline workers sustain hope, healing, and resilience in demanding care environments.

“Ultimately, my intended career path is to develop and lead spiritualized support models that foster hope, healing, and resilience among frontline workers,” Hilary says.

Her story is part of AFC’s October Membership Month series, highlighting the people, ministries, and formation that membership helps make possible across the Anglican Church of Canada.

This National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Anglicans across our diocese marked the solemn occasion in a variety of meaningful ways.

On Parliament Hill, several members from local parishes were honoured to volunteer and help carry the 60-metre Memorial Cloth.

Within our local parishes, communities gathered for deep reflection and learning. St. John the Evangelist displayed the Survivors' Flag, while St. Thomas the Apostle offered parishioners the opportunity to participate in a smudging ceremony and hear teachings from the All My Relations Episcopal Panel.

Janice Horton, a longtime parishioner and choir member at St. Thomas Alta Vista and the chair of Ellwood House, was recently honoured by Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe with a commemorative coin celebrating the City of Ottawa's 200th anniversary.

This special recognition celebrates community members who have made profound contributions to the well-being and enrichment of Ottawa.

J. Davey Gerhard, Executive Director of The Episcopal Network for Stewardship (TENS) will join our upcoming legacy giving webinar as one of three speakers.

Davey has served as the TENS Executive Director since January 2020 and follows in the footsteps of several prophetic and dedicated leaders since its inception nearly 30 years ago. Davey brings more than three decades of experience raising money for good causes, 15 of those years in service to the Episcopal Church.

Davey believes that the best conversations happen at the conversation of money and meaning and loves to see people fall in love with generosity and abundance. In addition to his work, Davey enjoys Disney-inspired travel, entertaining friends with dinner parties, and learning languages (14 and counting!).

Christ Church Bells Corners is hosting an Introduction to Christianity program beginning in October. The program is also great for those wishing to renew, deepen or transform their faith life. This is an eight week program on Tuesday nights with one full day Saturday retreat. Transforming Questions is a course designed to help participants engage the basic questions of the Christian faith through a combination of teaching and conversation. Participants gather to share a meal, which sets the foundation for conversation and questioning in a safe space that is rooted in inclusion of diverse thought and backgrounds.
