Sakina Temple No. 145 was constituted in May 1979, to provide an opportunity for ladies living in the Ottawa Valley to enjoy social interaction and fun while working together to raise funds and provide items to support the Shriners Hospital for Children® – Canada in Montreal. Although we are called a Temple, we are not a religious organization or church, but a group of dedicated women working fo
r the special children served by the Shriners Hospitals. In the spring our members elect a Queen to preside over the Temple for the coming year and each new Queen, along with her officers, are installed at a Ceremony of Installation. This ceremony is filled with beautiful ritual and is open to family and friends, and members of the public. Our year is filled with fun and fellowship while we enjoy fundraising and social events. We host a variety of annual and special activities which are open to the public. In fact, their success is due to the support of family and friends in the community. The Temple provides opportunities to learn of new innovations and success stories of the young patients and to see what types of items we are sending to the Montreal Hospital for the use of the children. Our activities include an Annual Craft Sale and Luncheon in the fall that is very popular….you can start your Christmas shopping and have a delicious lunch as well. Sakina also finds ways to contribute to the Christmas activities at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Montreal. Sometimes in December, we hold a Christmas dinner and hilarious auction; other times we hold a toy drive to collect toys for the children's Christmas. In January, we hold our annual brunch - the best brunch in town we are told over and over (with both hot and cold choices) - and everyone is welcome. Families are encouraged to attend, and children are welcome. Other activities may include a Murder Mystery Night, a Scottish Dinner, a yard sale, a Strawberry Social or a Fashion Show. We are also amazing caterers for community events, and some of our members enjoy sewing specially requested items for the patients. Things are always changing; with fun and fellowship highlighting the rewarding work which is always for the special children of the Shriners Hospitals.
