🎓 Alumni Spotlight: Robert Cote Jr. 🎓

Robert’s journey to FNUniv was inspired by his late father, an FNUniv alumnus and educator who dedicated his life to teaching in First Nations communities. His father often reminded him that “education is the buffalo,” a teaching that continues to guide Robert’s work with Indigenous families and youth today.

At FNUniv, Robert experienced meaningful personal, cultural, and academic growth in a space where culture, ceremony, and community were central to learning. He credits the supportive environment with strengthening his identity and helping shape his path as a future educator.

Since graduating in 2025 with a degree in Indigenous Studies, Robert has worked with youth through Rainbow Youth Centre and now serves as a Family Safety Liaison Worker with Chief Red Bear Children’s Lodge, while continuing his Bachelor of Education studies.

Over the past 9 months I was a policy school facilitator. Building relationships with 6 Indigenous youth discussing and guiding conversations on policy. Teaching them & then sharing with me their stories of their communities - we learned so much from each other. We had our graduation for our policy school youth in Ottawa this week!

We have completed our time together & ended the program with the youth competing in a hackathon! The issue was emergency preparedness for indigenous communities & climate disaster. They had to write a policy brief and present it to professionals.

Eastern cohort pitched a national program that will provide funding for indigenous communities to support their own emergency plan. Goals included to make it accessible luring away from ISC like funding schedules & restrictions. Along with their program - education and training frameworks would be attached for communities needing supporting on how to build a response plan. They name themselves 7 Generation Task Force!

To witness their hard work and dedication has been on of the most fulfilling experiences from this program! They made me so proud. Happy for all the time we spent the last 9 months.

Our reigning Miss Indigenous Canada Gena Boubard has chosen Sunshine House Charity for all the delegates to work hard to fundraise.

I wanted to share some of the amazing work this charity does. They offer programs and spaces that are culturally aligned with Indigenous values and teachings. " We work to provide programming that fulfills people’s social, community, and recreational needs. Participants can come as they are and are not expected to be “clean” or sober." This charity is a safe space 2SLBTQIA+ community and programming that uplifts the community.

These types of charities are essential to healing for our people. They deserve to feel safe our relatives wounded by addiction still need protection.

All my fundraising initiatives go to this charity. If you feel like you can support this charity, please reach out for to make any donations.
